Chapter 3 - SHADOWS OF DECEPTION

The air in the living room turned frigid. Daniel pushed himself up from the floor, instinctively placing his body between Nora and the stranger. My thumb hovered over the call button on my phone, every nerve ending in my body screaming at me to run, but my legs felt glued to the hardwood floor.
"Who the hell are you?" Daniel demanded, his voice cracking with rage and fear. "How do you know my mother's name?"
The man stepped into the light of the entryway, closing the door behind him with a soft, ominous click. He was in his mid-forties, with sharp, angular features, slicked-back dark hair, and piercing grey eyes that calculated everything in the room within seconds. He brushed a few drops of rain off his lapel with casual indifference.
"My name is Julian Mercer," he said smoothly. "And I am the person who paid for your wife’s expensive fertility treatments after your third miscarriage, Daniel. I’m also the man who arranged for Elise to be your surrogate."
I looked at Daniel, expecting him to shout in confusion, but his expression shattered into pure guilt. He didn't look surprised. He looked caught.
"Daniel..." I whispered, my heart sinking deeper into my chest. "What is he talking about? You told me you used your savings and a bank loan for the surrogacy."
Daniel couldn't meet my eyes. He stared at the floor, his jaw clenched tight. Nora, still trembling on the rug, buried her face in her knees, weeping silently.
"Tell your mother the truth, Daniel," Julian sneered, stepping closer. "Tell her how deep in debt you were. Tell her about your failed investments, your gambling debts in Miami, and how you traded your soul to my firm just to give your wife the one thing she craved."
"Shut up!" Daniel yelled, lunging forward, but Julian casually stepped aside, pulling a heavy silver pocket watch from his jacket.
"We don't have time for your pathetic displays of pride," Julian said coldly. "Elise didn't just run away because she was grieving her husband. She ran because she found out who her husband really was, and who I am. And right now, she is running with a child that carries secrets far more dangerous than a simple custody dispute."
"What secrets?" I snapped, stepping forward and confronting Julian face-to-face. I was sixty-one years old, a retired schoolteacher, but the primal motherly instinct to protect my child and grandchild burned out any fear I had left. "What did you do to my family?"
Julian looked down at me, a cruel, amused smile playing on his lips. "Your daughter-in-law isn't as innocent as she looks, Mrs. Vance. Ask her why Elise’s husband, Marcus, had five hundred thousand dollars in a offshore account under Nora’s maiden name."
The room seemed to spin. I spun around to look at Nora. "Nora? Is this true?"
Nora lifted her head, her face pale as a sheet, eyes wild with terror. "It’s not what it looks like, Linda! I swear! Marcus was... Marcus was my stepbrother. I hadn't seen him in ten years. When Daniel and I needed a surrogate, Marcus brought Elise to us. He said she wanted to help. I didn't know about the money until last week!"
"You lied!" Daniel roared, turning on his wife. "You told me Elise was a stranger found through an agency! You told me you picked her out of a catalog!"
"I had to!" Nora sobbed, rising to her feet, her voice frantic. "If I told you she was Marcus’s wife, you would have refused! You hated Marcus! But we were running out of time, Daniel! My biological clock was ticking, the clinic was demanding payment, and Marcus offered to handle everything for free if we just paid Elise’s medical bills!"
"He didn't do it for free," Julian interrupted coldly. "Marcus was an accountant for my organization. He stole millions from me before he died in that 'accident' three weeks ago. And he used his pregnant wife and your surrogacy contract as a vault to hide the digital access keys to those funds."
I stared at Julian, the horror unfolding in layers like an onion. The missing pregnancy photos, the secrecy, the sudden rush, the nurse's warning—it wasn't just emotionally driven secrecy. It was a web of fraud, money laundering, and desperation.
"Where is Elise going?" I demanded, turning back to Julian. "If you know so much, where is she?"
"She thinks she's escaping to a safehouse in Savannah," Julian replied, pulling a sleek black smartphone from his pocket. "She has the baby, and she has the encrypted flash drive Marcus left behind. But my men are already tracking her. The problem, Mrs. Vance, is that Elise has rigged the drive to wipe itself if she dies or gets arrested. She will only hand it over in exchange for her safety and full legal custody of that baby."
"No!" Nora screamed. "That’s my baby! That's my son!"
"He isn't your son, Nora," Julian said softly, his voice dripping with venom. "Did you really think the fertility clinic used your eggs? After your third miscarriage, your reproductive tissue was completely unviable. The doctor didn't tell you because Marcus paid him to swap the eggs."
Nora froze, her breath catching in her throat. The room went dead silent, save for the violent rain beating against the windows.

"What did you say?" Daniel whispered, his voice hollow.
Julian smirked. "The baby Elise is carrying isn't biologically yours, Nora. It is biologically Daniel's... and Elise's. She wasn't just your gestational surrogate. She is the biological mother."
