Chapter 8 - The Web Unravels

Six months after the arrest of my parents and brother, the federal trial against Jacob Miller and Arthur Miller opened at the United States District Court in Austin.
Because of the massive amount of digital evidence provided by Victoria and the forensic audit conducted by Gregory's team, the federal prosecutors were relentless. The charges had expanded beyond simple wire fraud to encompass systemic racketeering, tax evasion, and bank fraud totaling over four million dollars across multiple investors and institutions.
I sat in the gallery on the opening day of the trial, flanked by Jessica and Sarah, my managing partner, who had stood by me throughout the entire nightmare.
In the defense dock, my father and brother sat side by side. But the illusion of family solidarity had vanished entirely. They didn't speak to each other. They didn't even look at each other.
During the opening statements, Jacob’s public defender attempted a desperate strategy: throwing my father under the bus.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," the defense attorney proclaimed, gesturing toward my father. "Jacob Miller was a visionary young businessman who fell victim to the overbearing, illegal financial manipulation of his father, Arthur Miller. It was Arthur Miller who set up the shell accounts. It was Arthur Miller who orchestrated the illegal transfer of funds. Jacob was merely a pawn following his father’s instructions!"
My father’s attorney immediately sprang up, shouting objections, while my father turned toward Jacob, his face twisted in disbelief and pure betrayal.
"You ungrateful coward!" my father yelled across the defense table, breaking decorum completely. "I ruined my life for you! I bought your houses! I paid off your debts! I tried to burn down her house for you!"
"Order! Order in this court!" the federal judge roared, slamming his gavel repeatedly. "Mr. Miller, sit down and remain quiet or I will have you bound and gagged!"
I watched the scene unfold with a sense of bizarre, surreal detachment. The monster my parents had created—the selfish, entitled, parasitic son who had been taught that he was entitled to take whatever he wanted from anyone else—had finally turned his teeth on his creator. Jacob had spent his whole life taking from me; now that I was out of reach, he was devouring our father to save his own skin.
The trial lasted two brutal weeks.
Witness after witness took the stand: defrauded investors, bank loan officers, forensic accountants, and finally, Victoria, who delivered a devastating, meticulous testimony detailing every conversation, every illegal transaction, and every lie spoken behind closed doors.
When the jury returned after a brief three-hour deliberation, the verdict was unanimous.
Guilty on all counts.
For Jacob Miller: Twenty-two years in federal prison without parole, alongside an order for three million dollars in restitution.
For Arthur Miller: Eighteen years in federal prison for racketeering, tax evasion, and attempted arson, with complete forfeiture of all personal real estate and retirement funds to satisfy civil and federal judgments.
As the judge read the sentences, my father slumped over the table, weeping uncontrollably. Jacob sat stone-faced, his eyes vacant, finally realizing that no bribe, no lie, and no sacrifice from his family could save him from the consequences of his own actions.
As the courtroom emptied, Sarah put her arm around my shoulders. "It's over, Bella. Really, truly over."

I looked toward the front of the courtroom, where the court clerks were packing away boxes of evidence—boxes containing my stolen notary stamp, forged deeds, burnt mahogany samples, and endless financial ledgers.
"It's over for them," I said, taking a deep, clean breath. "For me, it's just beginning."
