Zero nine

Chapter 15 - The Final Severance

Forty-eight hours after the raid on Grandfather Mountain, the fallout had ripped through the federal prison system like a wildfire.

The silver-haired operative was identified as Marcus Kane, an international corporate fixer Diane had placed on a multi-million-dollar rolling retainer over a decade ago. Kane’s satellite logs led federal investigators directly to a corrupt assistant warden at the Aliceville penitentiary, who had been smuggling encrypted satellite phones and handwritten correspondence in and out of Diane Mercer’s cell in exchange for offshore cryptocurrency deposits.

By Thursday afternoon, the Department of Justice had executed emergency administrative transfers.

I stood in the observation booth of the United States Maximum Security Penitentiary in Coleman, Florida. On the other side of four-inch ballistic glass sat Diane Mercer.

She was now housed in administrative solitary confinement, completely stripped of all privileges. No phone access. No commissary. No linen stationery. Her hair had turned entirely white, her face was hollowed out with exhaustion, and her fingers trembled against the steel table bolted to the floor.

Beside her, Nathan sat in an identical reinforced chair, his face buried in his handcuffed hands. The Department of Justice had revoked his plea deal due to his knowledge of Kane’s auxiliary trust fund, adding another ten years to his federal sentence.

The intercom clicked on. Maya Chen sat beside me, laying a thick stack of finalized federal orders against the glass.

"Diane Mercer. Nathan Mercer," Maya announced through the speaker. "As of noon today, Judge Alvarez approved the total dissolution of the Mercer name from all public, commercial, and philanthropic registries."

Diane looked up slowly, her bloodshot eyes locking onto mine with desperate, venomous fury. "Elena... you think this is over? Kane has other teams. The Mercer bloodline has resources you cannot even fathom!"

"Kane gave up every offshore account, every safe-deposit box, and every shell corporation in Zurich to avoid a twenty-five-year sentence for attempted murder," I said, my voice steady, clear, and utterly devoid of pity. "There are no more funds. There are no more operatives. There is no Mercer empire. There is only a six-by-eight concrete cell, a metal toilet, and twenty-eight years of silence."

Nathan slowly raised his head, looking at me through the thick glass with red, weeping eyes. "Elena... please. Tell them I didn't know about Kane. Tell them Mom forced me to sign the Swiss trust papers. I can't do twenty-two years in Coleman! It will kill me!"

"You made your choice the day you checked that camera feed from your laptop, Nathan," I said, looking at him for the last time in my life. "You wanted to watch me break. Now, you get to watch yourself be forgotten."

I turned to Maya, who handed me the final legal document: the complete forfeiture and deed transfer of all remaining Mercer ancestral holdings in Charleston directly to Aunt Ruth, Rachel, and Clara.

I pressed the document against the glass for Diane to see. Her name had been permanently struck from the family history, replaced by the women she had spent thirty years trying to destroy.

Diane let out a choked, voiceless scream, slamming her cuffed fists against the glass partition, but the heavy acoustic barrier muffled her rage into nothing more than a pathetic, distant thud. Two corrections officers immediately seized her by the arms and dragged her backward into the dark solitary corridor, kicking and thrashing until the heavy steel door slammed shut.

Nathan lowered his head onto the steel table, his sobs drowned out as the guard disconnected the intercom.

Maya and I walked out of the federal complex into the warm, golden Florida afternoon. The air felt light, sweet, and entirely clean.

"Where to now, Elena?" Maya asked, pulling her sunglasses down with a relaxed smile.

"Back to the lake," I answered, looking up at the wide, cloudless Carolina sky. "The water is calm, the doors are open, and the house is finally mine."
