Chapter 8 - The Live Reckoning

At 2:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the Midtown Press Club was packed wall-to-wall with over fifty journalists, news anchors, camera crews, and legal reporters. The air was charged with intense, high-stakes energy. Every major cable news network—CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and local New York outlets—was broadcasting live.

Eleanor and Chloe had even shown up, sitting at the back of the room accompanied by their slimy PR agent, ready to play the victims in front of the live cameras and crash the event.

I walked onto the raised stage, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, and sat at the center table. Maya sat directly beside me, looking stunning, elegant, and completely unfazed by the flashing camera lights. Julian sat to my right, holding a thick stack of certified legal documents.

The room fell into an immediate, breathless hush.

"Thank you all for coming," I began, my voice amplified clearly through the microphone. "Over the past forty-eight hours, a false narrative has been spun regarding my family, my marriage, and my corporate ethics. Accusations have been made that I abandoned my mother, framed my brother-in-law, and abused my family. Today, we are here to present the unedited, certified, and forensic facts."

A reporter from the New York Post immediately shouted out, "David! Your mother claims you threw her out onto the street without a dime! How do you answer to that?!"

Instead of answering verbally, I nodded to Julian.

Julian pressed a button on his tablet. The massive digital screens behind us flickered to life.

First, the high-definition security footage from our Brooklyn apartment played on full loop. The entire room watched in horrified silence as the crystal-clear video showed Eleanor and Chloe packing heavy coolers with every scrap of food, meat, and specialized infant formula. The audio was crisp and unquestionable:

"Don't be dramatic, Maya," Eleanor’s loud, haughty voice echoed through the speakers of the press room. "You have bread and instant soup. All of this high-end food will just spoil while we’re gone... Don't go crying to David."

The cameras immediately swivelled to the back of the room, zoom lenses focusing tightly on Eleanor’s face. She turned pale, shrinking back into her seat as the reporters around her gasped.

"That video was recorded on December 28th," Maya spoke into her microphone, her voice steady, powerful, and resonant. "Eleven days after I underwent an emergency C-section. My husband was in Germany working to support our family. He had wired fourteen thousand dollars to ensure I had round-the-clock medical nursing care and nutrition. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law took that money, stole my food, left me bleeding on a chair with a fever of 103 degrees, and used those funds to fly first-class to South Beach, Miami."

The room erupted into a frenzy of camera flashes and muttered exclamations.

"Furthermore," Julian announced, pressing the tablet again, "we have here the certified medical records from Manhattan General Emergency Room, signed by the Chief of Trauma, confirming severe malnutrition, surgical sepsis, and emergency intervention. And here—" Julian projected the banking wire logs onto the screen—"are the forensic audit reports showing that Mark and Ethan Vance used forged corporate seals to steal over four hundred thousand dollars from working-class subcontractors."

"That's a lie! It's all fake! He edited the videos!" Chloe suddenly screamed from the back of the room, standing up hysterically, her eyes wild. "He's using his money to buy off the police! My husband is innocent!"

"Your husband just pled guilty fifteen minutes ago in New York State Supreme Court, Mrs. Mark," Julian replied coldly, looking directly at her through his glasses. "He has agreed to testify as a state witness against Ethan Vance, and he has fully corroborated every single piece of evidence shown on these screens today."

Chloe collapsed back into her chair, burying her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. Eleanor looked around the room, realization finally dawning on her that her social standing, her lies, and her reputation were obliterated forever on live national television.

"Any further questions?" I asked the room calmly.

Not a single reporter spoke. The evidence was absolute, overwhelming, and devastating.
