Chapter 4 - The Ashes of Truth

The storm that had battered Ohio for three days finally broke by Tuesday morning, leaving behind a crisp, cool autumn air that smelled faintly of damp earth and pine.
In the peaceful living room of the Lawson home in Columbus, the violent turmoil of the past week felt like a bad dream, though the deep scars remained. The police tape that had once sealed off Candice’s bedroom was gone, and the house had been thoroughly cleaned. Every piece of clothing, furniture, and perfume belonging to Candice and her family had been packed into heavy trash bags and hauled off to the county dump. Gabriel refused to keep a single item in the house that bore their memory.
Lucas sat at the kitchen table, his color slowly returning. The pale, sunken look around his cheeks was disappearing, replaced by the healthy glow of a boy who was finally eating three full meals a day. Beside him, Victoria Bell was organizing a mountain of legal papers, while Marcus sat on the porch outside, keeping a quiet, vigilant watch over the driveway.
"The federal court moved exceptionally fast," Victoria said, sliding a certified document toward Gabriel. "Richard’s bail was flatly denied due to the severity of the charges and the flight risk. He’s currently being held at the Franklin County Corrections Center alongside Candice, Evelyn, and Valerie."
Gabriel took a slow sip of his coffee. "What about the kid? Wyatt?"
"Because he’s sixteen, he’s currently in the custody of juvenile detention," Victoria explained. "However, given the recorded video of him physically harassing Lucas and destroying property, the prosecutor is pushing to charge him as an accessory to felony abuse. He won't be stepping foot near this neighborhood ever again."
Lucas looked up from his plate, his fingers tightening slightly around his fork. "Dad... what’s going to happen to the house? And Mom’s silver coaster?"
Gabriel reached into his pocket, pulled out the polished silver coaster, and gently placed it in the center of the table right in front of his son. The metal gleamed brightly under the morning sunlight.
"It stays right here, Lucas," Gabriel said, his voice soft and warm. "This is your home. Nobody is ever taking it from you again."
Lucas stared at the coaster, a small, genuine smile touching his lips for the first time in months. "Thanks, Dad."
"There is, however, one remaining complication," Victoria interjected, her tone turning businesslike as she opened another legal folder. "While Richard’s assets have been frozen by the federal government, we discovered during the audit that he took out a private three-hundred-thousand-dollar high-interest loan six months ago using your house’s deed as collateral."
Gabriel froze, his eyes narrowing. "How could he use my deed? I never signed anything."
"He forged your signature, Gabriel," Victoria replied grimly. "And he used a corrupt notary public in Cincinnati who was on his payroll. The problem is that the private lending firm—a company named Apex Capital Holdings—doesn't care that the signature was forged. They are a predatory private equity group known for ruthless foreclosures. Because the loan is currently three months delinquent, they have already filed an emergency notice of seizure on this property."
Gabriel felt a cold fury reignite in his blood. "They can't steal my home based on a forged document!"
"Legally, we can fight it in civil court," Victoria admitted. "But civil courts move slowly—it could take a year or more to prove the forgery conclusively in front of a judge. In the meantime, Apex Capital has hired a private asset-recovery enforcement team to physically evict you from the premises by Friday afternoon."
"Private enforcement?" Marcus asked, stepping inside from the porch after hearing the conversation. "You mean legal thugs?"
"Essentially, yes," Victoria said. "Apex uses former private security contractors who operate in the gray areas of the law. They exploit loop-holes in foreclosure statutes to throw families out onto the street before the courts can intervene."
Gabriel slammed his hand down onto the table, making the coffee cups rattle. "Over my dead body. I built this house with my own two hands twenty years ago. Clara died in that bedroom upstairs. I am not letting a bunch of corporate loan sharks push my boy out onto the street."
"Gabe, listen to me," Marcus said, leaning over the table. "You can't fight a multi-million-dollar hedge fund with your fists. We need to find out who runs Apex Capital. If Richard used them, there’s a reason he chose that specific firm."
Victoria nodded in agreement. "Marcus is right. Apex Capital isn't just a random lending company. They specialize in buying up distressed debt from shady financial advisors like your brother. I started looking into their corporate hierarchy this morning, and the managing director’s name raised an immediate red flag."
"Who is it?" Gabriel asked.
"A man named Victor Vance," Victoria revealed, looking directly into Gabriel’s eyes.
Gabriel blinked, processing the surname. "Vance? Like... Candice Vance? Evelyn Vance?"
"Victor Vance is Evelyn’s estranged eldest son," Victoria declared solemnly. "Candice and Valerie’s older brother."
The room fell into a stunned silence. The tangled web of deceit was even deeper and more sickening than Gabriel had imagined. The entire operation hadn't just been a random partnership between Richard and a greedy stepmother; it was a joint criminal syndicate between the Vance family and Richard Lawson.
Victor Vance was the high-powered muscle behind the operation. While Candice worked from the inside to break Gabriel’s home and isolate Lucas, and Richard manipulated the financial documents, Victor provided the dark capital and the legal muscle to seize the assets once Gabriel was eliminated.
"They had every angle covered," Gabriel murmured, a chill running down his spine. "If I died on the road, Candice took the life insurance, Richard took the business capital, and Victor took the real estate."
"And now that Candice and Richard are in jail, Victor is trying to execute the real estate seizure before the federal authorities link Apex Capital to the fraud ring," Victoria warned. "He wants to claim this house, liquidate it immediately, and flee the country with the cash."
Gabriel stood up, walking over to the window and looking out at the calm, tree-lined street. He could see Frank standing on his rooftop across the street, holding his long-lens camera, guarding the perimeter just as he had done for days.
"Victoria," Gabriel said without turning around. "How long do we have before Victor’s enforcement team arrives?"
"Seventy-two hours," she replied. "Friday at three o'clock."
"Good," Gabriel said, turning back to face the room. His eyes were hard as flint, filled with the unbreakable resolve of a man who had survived thirty years on the hardest highways in America. "That gives us three days to turn this house into a fortress, gather every piece of evidence on Victor Vance, and prepare a reception he will never forget."
Marcus grinned grimly, cracking his massive knuckles. "I’ll call the union guys from the trucking depot. We’ve got twenty heavy-haul drivers who owe you favors, Gabe. If this corporate scumbag wants a war, we’ll bring him one."

Lucas looked at his father, the fear in his eyes slowly giving way to courage. "What do you want me to do, Dad?"
Gabriel walked over and placed his hand on his son's shoulder. "You stay strong, Lucas. You keep your head high. We fought off the snakes inside this house. Now we’re going to crush the one coming through the front door."
