Chapter 7

The victory at the St. Regis sent shockwaves through the financial world. By mid-afternoon, Vance Global stock had rallied by an unprecedented eighteen percent. The financial media hailed me as a corporate prodigy, the man who had neutralized an international criminal syndicate and saved his family’s empire in a single morning.
Julian Vance was being held without bail in a high-security federal detention facility in Brooklyn, facing charges that guaranteed he would spend the rest of his natural life behind bars. Victoria had been placed under strict house arrest at a small, secure apartment paid for by her court-appointed guardian, her luxury lifestyle reduced to ankle-monitor check-ins and frozen credit cards. Lucas, terrified of facing state prison time, had accepted a plea bargain, agreeing to testify against his uncle in exchange for a reduced sentence.
For the first time in months, peace seemed to descend upon our lives.
I stood in the nursery of our penthouse apartment, watching the soft yellow light of the setting sun filter through the lace curtains. The room was decorated in soft neutral tones—a handmade wooden crib sat in the center, surrounded by plush toys and small watercolor paintings of mountain landscapes that Elena had painted herself.
Elena stepped into the room, leaning her back gently against my chest. I wrapped my arms around her, resting my hands over the prominent swell of her stomach. The baby was kicking steadily, a strong, rhythmic pulsing that filled me with a deep, primal sense of protective pride.
“He’s active tonight,” Elena whispered, smiling as she rested her head against my shoulder.
“He knows his mother is finally safe,” I replied, kissing the side of her neck. “The security team outside is doubled. The legal battles are won. Next week, we’re taking the private jet to our estate in Maine. Just you, me, and the baby. No board meetings, no financial audits, no family drama.”
Elena turned in my arms, looking up at me with her soft hazel eyes. “Are you sure it’s completely over, Daniel? A man like Julian... he spent twenty years in the dark. Does a man like that truly lose everything in one morning?”
Her words hung in the air, a subtle chill touching my spine. Forensic accounting had taught me one fundamental truth: an empire built on deception never collapses cleanly. There are always loose threads, residual accounts, and fanatical loyalists who have nothing left to lose.
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed on the nearby changing table. It was Detective Callahan from the NYPD.
I answered, placing the call on speaker. “Detective? Is there an update on Victoria’s house arrest protocols?”
“Daniel,” Callahan’s voice sounded tight, filled with urgent static. “Where are you right now?”
“I’m at my penthouse. What’s wrong?”
“We have a critical situation,” Callahan said, the background noise of sirens blaring over the line. “Twenty minutes ago, a transport van carrying Julian Vance from the federal courthouse to the Metropolitan Detention Center was ambushed on the Brooklyn Bridge.”
My body went cold. “What did you just say?”
“A heavy commercial truck rammed the transport vehicle,” Callahan reported rapidly. “Four armed men wearing tactical gear engaged the federal marshals. It was a military-grade extraction operation, Daniel. They cut Julian out of his restraints and fled in a high-speed speedboat heading down the East River.”
Elena’s hand flew to her mouth, a sharp gasp escaping her lips.
“Where is he now?” I shouted, grabbing Elena’s hand and pulling her out of the nursery toward the master bedroom.
“Coast Guard and Homeland Security are searching the harbor, but we suspect he had a helicopter waiting at a private pad in New Jersey,” Callahan warned. “Daniel, listen to me carefully. Julian didn't flee toward the airport. One of the captured shooters admitted during preliminary interrogation that Julian gave one specific instruction before the ambush.”
“What instruction?”
“*‘Take the mother, take the child.’*”
The world stopped spinning. The air left my lungs.
“Detective, I have four private security guards at my door—” I began.
Suddenly, the lights in the penthouse flickered violently and died, plunging the entire apartment into pitch-black darkness.
The emergency backup generators didn't kick in. The electronic lock system on our front door let out a high-pitched, continuous error whine.
Simultaneously, two muffled thuds echoed from the outer hallway—the distinct, heavy sound of suppressed gunfire.
“Daniel!” Elena screamed as the darkness swallowed us.
“Stay behind me!” I roared, grabbing a heavy brass floor lamp from beside the bed and stepping in front of her.
The heavy steel front door of the penthouse didn't open keylessly. It was blown inward with a deafening CRACK of explosive breaching tape, sending wood splinters and smoke pouring into the grand foyer.
Through the haze of smoke, three tall figures wearing night-vision goggles and dark tactical attire stepped into the apartment. They moved with terrifying, professional precision, their silenced assault rifles raised.
From behind them stepped a figure illuminated only by the faint red glow of the emergency exit signs down the hall.
Julian Vance walked into my living room. His suit was torn, his shirt covered in dust from the bridge ambush, a streak of dried blood running down his temple. But his eyes—his eyes were burning with an unhinged, apocalyptic madness.
“Did you really think a few federal marshals could hold me, nephew?” Julian’s voice echoed through the dark apartment like a nightmare. “I told you... I built the security apparatus of this family. I built the backdoors.”
The two tactical men raised their weapons, pointing them directly at my chest.
“Get away from her, Daniel,” Julian commanded, pulling a heavy silver pistol from his belt. “I offered you fifty million dollars and a quiet life in Tuscany. You chose to ruin me. Now, I am going to take what is mine. Your father’s line ends tonight, but his blood will survive—raised by me, in my image, far away from this country.”
He pointed the pistol toward my head.
