Chapter 5 - Unraveling Secrets

The quiet sanctuary of my Santa Barbara estate was a stark contrast to the legal war zone of Los Angeles. Nestled in the rolling hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the stone mansion had been my haven ever since my husband passed away seven years ago.

In the primary guest suite, seven-year-old Noah was sitting on a plush sofa, playing with a set of wooden building blocks I had brought down from the attic. He was calm, bathed in the soft glow of the afternoon sun, unaware that his parents were currently being processed into the Los Angeles County Jail.

I stood at the doorway, leaning against the frame, watching him build a tower. My phone vibrated softly in my hand. I stepped back into the hallway and answered.

"Eleanor, it's Marcus."

"Are they processed?" I asked softly.

"Yes. Evan and Claire were booked at central processing two hours ago. Bail was set at five hundred thousand dollars each. Neither of them has the funds or the collateral to post bond. They will remain in custody until their preliminary arraignment on Friday morning."

"And Lorraine?"

"Lorraine is currently on a extradition transport van from Las Vegas to Los Angeles," Marcus said, his tone turning serious. "But Eleanor... something else came up during the initial asset seizure at Evan’s rented office in Century City."

I narrowed my eyes. "What did you find?"

"We found a secondary safe inside Evan’s private desk. It contained a set of real estate title deeds, offshore bank setup papers, and a physical hard drive," Marcus explained. "Arthur spent the last three hours decrypting the drive. Eleanor... Evan wasn't just stealing from your logistics company to fund his fake movie career. He was actively trying to force a hostile takeover of your primary operating entity."

My breath hitched. "What?"

"Evan and Lorraine had drafted corporate restructuring documents," Marcus revealed. "They were using the forged digital signatures not just for short-term cash loans, but to systematically transfer non-voting shares of Vance Logistics into a front company owned by Gable Holdings. If you had stayed silent for another six months, they would have accumulated twenty-six percent of your corporate equity. Combined with an institutional proxy vote they were quietly negotiating with one of your disgruntled board members, they were planning to vote you out as CEO by summer."

A cold sweat broke out across my back. The scale of the betrayal wasn't just selfish greed—it was a calculated, predatory execution aimed at stealing everything I had spent forty years building.

"Who was the board member?" I demanded, my voice dropping an octave into pure executive authority.

"Richard Hayes," Marcus replied instantly.

Richard Hayes. My late husband’s former business partner. A man I had trusted for thirty years, a man who sat at my family's Thanksgiving table every single year.

"Richard," I whispered, disgust burning through my veins. "Of course. He always believed a woman shouldn't be running a national logistics empire."

"We have emails between Richard and Lorraine," Marcus added. "Lorraine offered Richard a thirty percent stake in the restructured holding entity once you were ousted on grounds of 'incapacity due to cognitive decline.' That was their narrative, Eleanor. They were going to claim you had early-onset dementia, use your corporate generosity as evidence of unsound judgment, and place you in a high-end memory care facility while they stripped the company bare."

I leaned against the hallway wall, my hand trembling slightly—not from fear, but from a raging, incandescent fury. The Christmas lunch insult was no longer just an act of petty disrespect; it was the psychological groundwork. They were trying to establish a public record that I was confused, lonely, and erratic.

"Marcus," I said, every syllable laced with steel. "Call an emergency Board of Directors meeting for ten o'clock tomorrow morning."

"You want to remove Richard?"

"I don't just want him removed," I said coldly. "I want him ruined. Draft an immediate revocation of his board seat based on breach of fiduciary duty and corporate treason. Contact our corporate governance team and prepare a press release. If Richard Hayes wants to play dirty, I will ensure he never sets foot in a corporate boardroom for the rest of his natural life."

"Consider it done," Marcus replied. "And what about Claire? She signed several of those equity transfer documents as a witness."

I closed my eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. "Claire made her bed, Marcus. She traded her mother for a life of fake luxury. Let her taste the consequences."

The next morning, the board room at Vance Logistics corporate headquarters in downtown Los Angeles was charged with tension. The long mahogany table was surrounded by eight board members, all wearing sleek suits and nervous expressions.

At the far end sat Richard Hayes—a distinguished man in his sixties with silver hair and a tailored blue suit. He was casually scrolling through his phone, completely unaware of the trap that had been set for him.

I walked into the room at exactly 10:00 AM, flanked by Marcus and Arthur. The room fell dead silent.

I took my seat at the head of the table. I didn't say good morning. I didn't smile.

"This emergency meeting of the Board of Directors of Vance Logistics is now in session," I announced calmly. "We have one item on the agenda today: the immediate removal of Board Member Richard Hayes for corporate treason, fraud, and conspiracy."

Richard laughed—a loud, booming sound meant to project confidence. "Eleanor, what kind of ridiculous joke is this? Have you lost your mind?"

"I haven't lost my mind, Richard," I said smoothly, gesturing to Marcus. "But you have certainly lost your freedom."

Marcus stepped forward and distributed a thick blue folder to every board member at the table. Inside were printed copies of encrypted emails between Richard Hayes and Lorraine Gable, outlining the timeline for my forced removal, the forged equity transfers, and the liquidation scheme for Vance Logistics' real estate assets.

As the board members flipped through the documents, gasped murmurs filled the room. Richard’s arrogant smile slowly withered into a look of sheer, unadulterated terror.

"This... this is a fabrication!" Richard stammered, standing up so fast his leather chair rolled back into the wall. "This is illegally obtained! Eleanor is orchestrating a witch hunt because of personal family drama!"

"These documents were seized under a legal search warrant executed by the LAPD Financial Crimes Division at Vance Media Works yesterday," Marcus said calmly. "And as of twenty minutes ago, the Securities and Exchange Commission was formally notified of your involvement in an illegal attempt to manipulate corporate equity through forged guarantees."

Richard’s face turned bright red, veins bulging at his temples. "You bitch! You think you can just march in here and destroy my career?! I built this company with your husband!"

"My husband built this company with my sweat and my blood!" I shouted, standing up and leaning over the table, my presence utterly dominating the room. "You were just a silent partner who collected dividends while I drove trucks across the country! You thought because I was aging, because I was quiet, that I would let you take what belongs to my family?!"

"You're a crazy old woman!" Richard yelled, looking around the table for support, but every single board member turned their head away from him, refusing to make eye contact.

"By unanimous consent of the remaining board," I said, looking around the room, "Richard Hayes is hereby stripped of his voting rights, removed from the Board of Directors, and banned from all company properties effective immediately. Security will escort you from the building, Richard. And I suggest you retain a very good criminal defense attorney—because the DA is filing indictment papers against you before lunch."

Two heavy-set security guards walked into the board room, taking Richard by his arms.

"You'll pay for this, Eleanor!" Richard screamed as he was dragged out into the hallway, his boots dragging across the carpet. "You'll die alone in that giant house! Your own daughter hates you!"

The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut, cutting off his shouts. The boardroom returned to a heavy, stunned silence.

I smoothed my jacket, turned to the remaining board members, and sat back down at the head of the table.

"Now," I said calmly. "Let's review our Q4 logistics margins."
