Chapter 13 - The Shadow Board

By midnight, my penthouse office had been transformed into an intelligence war room. Whiteboards lined the glass walls, covered in complex corporate flowcharts linking Apex Sovereign Capital, Cayman Islands holding companies, and Harrison Croft’s legal accounts in Oakbrook.

Arthur Mercer sat at the long conference table, surrounded by three junior associates pulling land deeds, while Miller monitored a live data stream sent from his team in Delaware.

“Gregory Vance is smart,” Miller said, tapping his tablet screen to project a structural diagram onto the wall monitor. “He doesn't hold any assets under his own name. Apex Sovereign is owned by a shell entity registered in Saint Kitts, which is turn owned by a blind trust in Jersey. But three days ago, Harrison Croft received a wire transfer of four hundred thousand dollars directly from an account held at a private bank in Zurich.”

“The same bank Julian Vance used before his arrest?” I asked, leaning over the table with my pen in hand.

“Different bank, same private wealth management group,” Miller replied. “And guess who signed the compliance authorization for that wire transfer?”

I looked up, my eyes meeting Miller’s. “Evelyn.”

Mercer dropped his pen onto the table. “Evelyn is currently serving an eighteen-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Waseca, Minnesota. How could she authorize an offshore wire transfer?”

“Because before she was taken into custody,” I said, the pieces of the puzzle snapping together in my mind with terrifying clarity, “Evelyn didn't just give Julian the access codes to the Cayman accounts. She executed a secondary power of attorney naming Gregory Vance as the primary executor of her private family trust in the event of her imprisonment. She knew her family was going down. She set up Gregory to act as her outside proxy.”

“She’s directing a corporate war from inside a federal prison,” Mercer whispered, a look of profound shock crossing his face. “She’s using Gregory’s capital and Croft’s legal firm to execute the ultimate revenge scenario against your firm.”

“She thinks she is,” I corrected him cold-bloodedly. “Evelyn believes that because she’s behind bars, she’s immune to further civil liability. She thinks Gregory can play the role of an independent creditor claiming legitimate debt guarantees from Marcus’s old transactions.”

My private phone chimed. It was a secure satellite text message from Clara in Minnesota.

I opened the message. It contained a high-resolution photograph of a visitor log from the FCI Waseca prison facility, obtained quietly by Clara’s private legal team in Rochester.

Two days ago, Harrison Croft had visited Evelyn Vance in the inmate visiting room under the pretext of 'legal consultation regarding pending appeals.'

“They made a mistake,” I said, turning the phone toward Mercer and Miller. “Croft didn't visit Evelyn as her appellate attorney; he’s not registered as her attorney of record in the federal court system. He visited her as the managing director of Apex Sovereign Capital.”

Mercer’s face lit up as the legal trap became instantly apparent. “If Croft visited her as an agent of Apex, then Apex Sovereign Capital is not an independent third-party creditor! It is an alter-ego entity controlled by a convicted federal felon attempting to hide assets from the primary liquidation decree issued by Judge Stone!”

“Which makes their state court audit injunction in DuPage County a direct act of bankruptcy fraud and contempt of a federal court order,” I added, my pen leaving a heavy red circle around Harrison Croft’s name on the glass wall.

“What’s the move, Danielle?” Miller asked, his hands resting on his belt. “Do we file the emergency motion with Judge Stone in Chicago?”

“Not yet,” I said, walking to the window and watching the fog roll off Lake Michigan, swallowing the city streets in a dense, white haze. “If we go straight to Judge Stone now, Croft will simply withdraw the state injunction, claim a clerical error, and Gregory Vance will slip back into the shadows of his offshore trusts in Jersey. I want Gregory Vance in Chicago. I want him to attend the formal emergency hearing in DuPage County thinking he’s about to sign an enforcement order against my firm.”

“You’re going to let them think their state court ambush is working,” Mercer smiled, shaking his head in quiet awe. “You’re baiting a vulture with your own corporate assets.”

“Gregory Vance spent twenty years scavenging off ruined companies from a safe distance in London,” I said, turning back to face my team, my eyes burning with absolute, lethal resolve. “I’m going to make sure that the moment he steps foot inside an Illinois courtroom, the cage door snaps shut behind him forever.”

I pulled my tablet toward me and drafted an immediate response to Harrison Croft’s legal team in Oakbrook.

“Danielle Vance Agencies agrees to present all primary corporate ledgers and account structures for inspection at the DuPage County Chancery Division hearing on Friday at 9:00 AM, provided Gregory Vance attends in person as the primary managing director of Apex Sovereign Capital to execute the final settlement agreement.”

The vulture had been offered his meal. Now all we had to do was prepare the slaughterhouse.
