Chapter 5 - The Matriarch's Trap

Panic flared in the darkness like a struck match.
“Dad!” Grace screamed.
“Stay behind me!” I shouted, reaching out blindly until my hands caught Emily’s sleeve and pulled both girls behind my back.
Before Chris could flip on his flashlight, the heavy glass patio doors overlooking the ocean shattered inward with a deafening crash. Shards of glass rained down onto the hardwood floor as three tall, dark figures wearing tactical gear and night-vision goggles strode into the living room. Red laser sights danced across the walls, sweeping over Andrea, Chris, and finally coming to a rest directly over my chest.
“Nobody move,” a harsh, synthetic voice commanded through a tactical mask. “Hands where we can see them.”
Chris raised his hands slowly, dropping his pistol onto the sofa. “Easy, fellas. There are civilian kids in here.”
The front door clicked unlocked and swung open. A tall, elegant elderly woman walked into the dimly lit room, holding a slender silver cane topped with an ornate diamond handle. She wore a tailored charcoal wool coat and an immaculate pearl necklace that caught the moonlight streaming through the broken glass doors. Behind her stepped the silver-haired man I had spotted on the beach earlier that afternoon—Julian Vance’s head of security.
The old woman paused, her sharp, cold blue eyes cutting through the gloom, scanning the room with absolute authority until her gaze locked onto Emily and Grace. Her expression didn't soften; there was no warmth, no tears of grandmotherly joy. Her face was a terrifying mask of cold, calculated ambition.
“Victoria Vance,” Andrea whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “The dowager matriarch.”
Victoria ignored Andrea entirely, taking two slow, measured steps toward my daughters. “Remarkable,” she murmured, her voice smooth, refined, and completely devoid of empathy. “The resemblance is unmistakable. Grace has her mother’s high cheekbones, and Emily inherited the Vance chin. Genetic royalty, hidden away in the mud by a broken-hearted widower.”
I stepped directly into her path, blocking her view of my girls. “Get the hell out of my house.”
Victoria slowly lifted her chin, looking at me as if I were a speck of dirt adhering to her designer shoes. “Your house, Mr. Miller? This entire coastal strip is owned by a subsidiary of Vance Holdings. Technically, you are trespassing on private corporate property. But I am not here to discuss real estate.”
“You served us with a fraudulent federal lawsuit,” I spat, my fists clenched at my sides. “You’re trying to frame me for kidnapping.”
“A necessary legal lever,” Victoria replied calmly, adjusting her suede gloves. “My son, Richard, filed that lawsuit without my explicit authorization. He is an idiot driven by desperate greed, terrified that these two girls will strip him of his executive control. He wants you in prison and the girls under his legal guardianship so he can sign away their trust rights before they understand what they possess.”
“And what do you want?” Emily demanded, standing up tall behind me, her voice shaking but resolute. “Are you here to kill us like Richard tried to do to our mother?”
Victoria’s eyes flickered with a brief, icy flash of temper. “I did not order the hit on my own daughter, child. Eleanor was weak. She fell in love with a low-born clinic doctor, became pregnant with unauthorized heirs, and attempted to use those infants as leverage to dismantle our family’s corporate legacy. Richard handled her 'disappearance' without my consent, a mistake I have spent eighteen years rectifying.”
“You let your own son murder your daughter?!” Grace gasped in utter horror.
“Eleanor made her choices,” Victoria stated coldly, without a single trace of remorse. “And now, you two must make yours. You stand on the precipice of inheriting the largest controlling stake in Vance Global. But you are uneducated, untrained, and entirely devoid of the ruthless instinct required to run an empire. If you attempt to claim that inheritance blindly, Richard will have you eliminated before the ink on the probate court decree is dry.”
She gestured toward the armed men standing by the shattered patio glass.
“You have a choice tonight, girls. You can stay with this broken carpenter who raised you in mediocrity, face Richard’s federal prosecution, and watch him end up in a maximum-security prison for illegal adoption… or you can walk out that door with me right now. I will drop all criminal charges against Trent Miller, ensure he receives a comfortable five-million-dollar 'finder's fee' for his eighteen years of service, and prepare you to take your rightful place at the top of the Vance empire.”
May you like
“Finder's fee?” I repeated, the word burning like poison in my throat. “You think you can buy my daughters like cattle?”
“They are not your daughters, Mr. Miller,” Victoria said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. “They carry the Vance bloodline. They were born for greatness, not to sell cupcakes and live in a house with pale-yellow walls. Make your decision, girls. Your fake father's freedom depends entirely on your compliance.”
