Zero nine

Chapter 4 - Z

The court documents felt like lead in my hands.

"Financial instability." "Living in a two-bedroom rented apartment." "Working multiple low-income jobs." Elaine’s lawyers had systematically dissected my life, taking every sacrifice I had made to keep Sophie alive and twisting it into proof of unfitness.

"She can't do this," I whispered, my voice trembling as I read the harsh legalese. "She can't take my baby."

"She won't," Daniel declared, his face burning with a furious red. He snatched the papers out of Attorney Vance's hands and ripped them straight down the middle, throwing the shredded pieces into the attorney's face. "Get the hell out of this hospital before I have security throw you out the window!"

Victoria Vance didn't even flinch. She simply pulled a duplicate set of documents from her briefcase and placed them neatly on the bedside table.

"Ripping paper doesn't dissolve an injunction, Mr. Parker," Vance said calmly. "The hearing is set for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM at the Massachusetts Family Court. If Ms. Parker fails to appear, default custody will be awarded to Mrs. Elaine Parker. Have a good day."

She turned on her heel and walked out, her two armed security guards trailing behind her.

I sank onto the edge of the bed, my mind spiraling into pitch-black panic. I had three hundred dollars in my checking account. My health insurance was already threatening to deny coverage for Sophie's surgery because of a technicality in the pre-authorization forms. I couldn't afford a high-powered trial attorney to fight a billionaire corporate matriarch in twenty-four hours.

"Hannah, look at me," Daniel dropped to his knees in front of me, grabbing both of my hands. His hands were ice-cold. "Listen to me. I know you hate me. I know you don't trust me. But you cannot fight Elaine alone. She owns judges. She owns politicians. She will crush you."

"And what are you going to do?" I asked, tears finally breaking through my defenses. "She just suspended you from your own company! You're stripped of your power!"

"She stripped me of my executive title, not my brains," Daniel said, his eyes blazing with a fierce, terrifying intensity I had never seen in him before. "She forgot who actually built Parker Global's tech infrastructure over the last ten years. She thinks she owns me because she raised me. She’s about to find out what happens when you corner a father."

He pulled out his phone and dialed a number on speakerphone.

"Carter," Daniel said as soon as the line connected.

"Daniel?" a deep, gravelly voice answered. "I heard what happened at the office. Your mother called an emergency board meeting for 2 PM to strip your voting rights."

"I need you to pull the emergency vault files," Daniel commanded. "The offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. The ones my father set up before he died."

A heavy silence fell over the line. "Daniel... if you touch those files, Elaine will invoke the non-disclosure clause. You could go to federal prison."

"She’s trying to steal my daughter, Carter!" Daniel yelled into the phone. "I don't care if I go to prison! I don't care if the entire company burns to the ground! Get the files ready. And hire Samuel Thorne. I want him in Boston by midnight."

I gasped. Samuel Thorne was the most feared custody and corporate litigator in the country. He charged five thousand dollars an hour and had never lost a high-profile custody battle in his thirty-year career.

"Daniel..." I whispered. "You don't have to ruin your life..."

"My life was already ruined six years ago when I let my mother walk you out of my life, Hannah," Daniel said, looking up at me, his eyes overflowing with raw regret. "I let her kill my marriage. I let her erase my daughter. If I have to destroy the Parker name to protect you two, then I will tear it down block by block."

That evening, as Sophie finally fell into a deep, medicine-induced sleep, the door to the room opened again.

It wasn't a doctor. It wasn't a lawyer.

It was Brooke.

She was wearing plain jeans and a trench coat, devoid of the luxury designer clothes she had been wearing yesterday. She carried a thick yellow legal folder under her arm.

Daniel stood up instantly, defensive. "Brooke? What are you doing here? If you're here to help my mother—"

"Shut up, Daniel," Brooke said sharply, stepping past him and placing the folder directly into my lap.

I looked at the folder, then up at her. "What is this?"

"That," Brooke said, taking a deep breath, "is every financial record, every hidden email, and every wire transfer Elaine Parker has made over the past four years."

Daniel gasped. "Brooke... where did you get this?"

"I was married to you for eighteen months, Daniel," Brooke said, her voice dropping to a hard, decisive tone. "Did you really think I just sat at home arranging flowers? I noticed the discrepancies in your mother's personal trust months ago. She wasn't just paying off doctors to forge medical opinions—she’s been embezzling funds from the charity foundation to buy silence from former staff."

Brooke turned directly to me, her eyes shining with absolute solidarity.

"Elaine lied to me too, Hannah," Brooke said gently. "She told me you were a gold-digger who traded your baby for a payout. She made me believe I was saving Daniel from a toxic past. But yesterday, when I saw the return-stamped envelopes... I realized I was just another chess piece in her sick game."

Brooke reached down and pressed her hand over mine.

"Take her down, Hannah. Don't let that monster touch this little girl."
