Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT THEY CAME FOR MY CHILDREN

Z

I opened the door with two attorneys listening through speakerphone and every security camera in the penthouse recording.

Two uniformed officers waited in the hallway. Beside them stood a woman in a gray coat holding a city identification badge. Behind her was a man I recognized from countless charity dinners.

Thomas Vance.

Serena’s father.

He smiled as if we were meeting over cocktails instead of during an attempt to take my children.

“Julian,” he said. “This misunderstanding can end quietly.”

I held up the DNA results. “Nothing about this will be quiet.”

The woman identified herself as Marla Pierce from Child Protective Services. She claimed Elena had removed the boys from an emergency placement after an eviction.

“I never signed placement papers,” Elena said from behind me.

Pierce opened a folder. “Your signature is here.”

Elena examined the page.

“That isn’t mine.”

I almost laughed at the cruelty of it. First my signature had been forged on a letter abandoning her. Now hers had been forged on papers surrendering her children.

Thomas Vance’s smile vanished when he noticed Eleanor.

“You weren’t supposed to be here,” he said.

My mother’s voice became ice. “That was your first mistake.”

The officers exchanged an uncertain glance.

David’s voice came through my phone. “The warrant has been stayed by Judge Alvarez pending review. Officers, confirmation is being transmitted to your department now.”

One officer checked his radio.

After a tense exchange, he stepped back. “We can’t enforce removal until the court confirms the documentation.”

Marla Pierce looked furious. “These children may be in danger.”

“They were sleeping in a restaurant storage room this morning,” I said. “Where was your concern then?”

Thomas adjusted his cuff. “Careful, Julian. A public custody battle will expose details your shareholders may find troubling.”

“Is that why you bought Elena’s building?”

His eyes flickered.

That was enough.

“You engineered her eviction,” I said. “Then you arranged for her to work at the restaurant where you knew I would be.”

Eleanor turned sharply. “You wanted Julian to find them?”

Thomas looked at her with contempt. “You promised the woman and her children had disappeared. Then my investigators found them living fifteen minutes from Manhattan.”

“So you made them homeless?” Serena’s voice came from the elevator.

Everyone turned.

She stepped into the hallway, still wearing her silver dress beneath a wool coat. Her mascara was gone, and her face looked painfully young.

“Dad, tell me he’s wrong.”

Thomas’s expression softened. “Serena, go home.”

“You used me.”

“I protected your future.”

“No. You protected the merger.”

Thomas glanced at the officers. “This is a family disagreement.”

Serena held up her phone. “Then why did your chief of staff send me these?”

On the screen were emails discussing Elena’s eviction, the restaurant schedule, and a plan labeled Mercer Contingency.

The goal had not been to reunite me with my sons.

It had been to create a scandal.

If I abandoned them, Thomas could control me with the secret. If I acknowledged them, the Mercer board would question my judgment days before voting on the Vance merger. Either way, Thomas would gain leverage.

“You leaked the engagement cancellation to the press,” I said.

“I gave the press a more interesting story.”

The elevator opened again.

Camera flashes exploded from the lobby below.

Reporters had entered the building.

Thomas had brought them.

“Mr. Mercer!” someone shouted. “Did you father four secret children?”

“Did Elena Brooks attempt to extort your family?”

“Is Serena Vance ending the engagement?”

The boys heard every word.

Logan buried his face against Elena. Liam covered his ears. Luke began to cry.

Leo did not.

He looked at me with an expression no six-year-old should possess.

“Are you going to say we’re not yours?”

The question silenced the hallway more effectively than any command.

I knelt before him.

“No.”

“Even if they get mad?”

“Especially then.”

I stood, walked past the officers, and faced the cameras.

“My name is Julian Mercer. The four boys inside this apartment are my biological sons. I learned of their existence today.”

Questions erupted.

I raised my voice.

“Their mother did not hide them from me. She was deceived, threatened, and abandoned by people connected to my family. Any report describing her as an extortionist is false.”

Behind the cameras, Thomas Vance’s face tightened.

I continued.

“Effective immediately, I am suspending all negotiations between Mercer Holdings and Vance Urban Development. I am also requesting independent investigations into fraudulent housing practices, forged custody documents, and interference with medical records.”

“You can’t do that,” Thomas said.

“I just did.”

My phone began vibrating with calls from board members.

I ignored them.

Eleanor came to stand beside me.

The reporters surged forward.

“Mrs. Mercer, did you know about the children?”

My mother could have lied.

Instead, she looked at Elena.

“Yes,” Eleanor said. “I knew Elena Brooks was pregnant six years ago.”

The hallway fell silent again.

My chest tightened.

“I interfered in their relationship,” she continued. “I believed I was protecting my son and our company. I was wrong.”

It was not a complete confession, but from Eleanor Mercer, it was an earthquake.

Thomas stepped toward her. “You’ll destroy both families.”

“No,” she replied. “Only yours.”

The police officers escorted Thomas and Marla toward the elevator while David arranged for investigators to preserve the documents they had brought.

When the door finally closed, the penthouse became quiet.

Elena stood in the living room, one hand resting on Leo’s shoulder.

“You announced them to the world,” she said.

“I had to stop the lie.”

“You should have asked me.”

She was right.

In my need to claim my sons, I had made another decision without her consent.

“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry doesn’t put privacy back.”

“No, it doesn’t.”

Her anger trembled into exhaustion. “You don’t understand what happens tomorrow. Reporters will follow them. Parents at school will whisper. Your family’s enemies will turn four little boys into headlines.”

“Then I’ll protect them.”

Elena looked at me sadly. “That is exactly what your mother said when she destroyed us.”

The words landed hard.

Before I could respond, Eleanor’s phone rang.

She answered, listened, then looked at me.

“The board has called an emergency meeting for eight tomorrow morning.”

“To remove me?”

“To give you a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Deny Elena and relinquish any claim to the boys,” she said, “or resign as chief executive of Mercer Holdings.”

Leo’s fingers slipped into mine.

I looked down at my son.

For six years, I had inherited everything except the truth.

May you like

By morning, I would have to decide what I was willing to lose to keep it.
