Chapter 15 - The Sovereign Feast

That evening, the sun set over Chicago in a blaze of brilliant violet, amber, and molten gold.

The wrap-around terrace of my penthouse at the top of the Sterling Tower sat sixty floors above the city, offering a panoramic view of the vast, shimmering expanse of Lake Michigan and the glowing architectural canyons of downtown.

A gentle jazz melody drifted from the outdoor acoustic system, blending seamlessly with the distant, rhythmic hum of the metropolis below.

In the center of the terrace sat a long, custom-designed white marble table, illuminated by flickering votive candles and adorned with fresh white orchids.

Seated around the table were Darcy, Clara, Marcus Cole, and the senior executive women who formed the backbone of Apex Global’s leadership team. We were dressed casually in soft cashmere and silk, laughing freely, sharing stories of upcoming business expansions, and celebrating our shared victories without a single shadow of tension or fear.

The private catering staff, led by Chicago’s most renowned female culinary artist, brought out the evening’s final course: sixty miniature, artisanal dessert creations, each one distinct, exquisite, and crafted with world-class precision.

There were delicate gold-leaf chocolate truffles, saffron mango mousses, lavender-infused macarons, and miniature passionfruit tarts—sixty distinct courses, served on custom porcelain platters.

Clara raised her wine glass, laughing as she surveyed the magnificent spread. “Sloan, is this what I think it is?”

I picked up my glass of chilled Pinot Grigio, looking around the table at the extraordinary people who had helped me reclaim my life.

“It is,” I smiled softly. “Five years ago, a man told me that if I couldn't cook sixty dishes on demand, I wasn't worthy of sitting at his table.”

Darcy leaned back, a triumphant, wicked smirk playing on her lips. “And now?”

“Now,” I said, looking out over the magnificent skyline that stretched toward the horizon, “I own the table. I own the building. And every single dish served here is a celebration of freedom.”

Marcus raised his glass, followed immediately by Darcy, Clara, and every woman seated along the marble terrace.

“To Sloan Sterling,” Marcus declared, his voice full of profound respect. “The woman who rewrote the rules of the game.”

“To Sloan!” they toasted together, the crystal glasses chiming in harmonious, ringing unison under the twilight sky.

We ate, laughed, and toasted long into the evening, the warmth of genuine friendship and absolute security wrapping around us like an impenetrable shield.

Around midnight, as the guests slowly filtered inside to prepare for their rides home, I walked to the edge of the glass railing alone.

The city lights twinkled like billions of stars beneath my feet. The wind blew softly through my hair, cool and refreshing, carrying the scent of rain and open water.

I thought about the young woman who had sat on a freezing kitchen floor in the dark, clutching her phone with trembling hands while the click of a deadbolt echoed in her ears. I wished I could reach back through time, place a gentle hand on her shoulder, and whisper into the darkness:

Don't cry. Don't beg. Just wait. Because tomorrow, you are going to show them what happens when a woman decides she will never be a victim again.

I lifted my glass one last time to the endless Chicago skyline.

The cold was gone. The darkness was broken. The parasites were caged.

I took a slow, sweet sip under the vast, starlit Midwestern sky, knowing with every fiber of my soul that I was completely, permanently sovereign.

The feast was finished.

And the empire was mine.
