Chapter 8 - THE DEBT PAID

Z
Three weeks later, the Boston sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue. The air was crisp, carrying the promise of winter, but inside the private rehabilitation gym of the Pascale estate, it was warm and quiet.
I stood by the parallel bars, holding a clipboard, watching as Massimo Pascale walked toward me. He didn’t drag his feet. He didn't rely on the bars for support. He walked with a slight, almost imperceptible stiffness, but his posture was absolute, commanding, and powerful.
He reached the end of the bars, stepping out into the open floor, and stopped inches in front of me.
“Assessment, Dr. Fitzgerald?” he murmured, a dangerous, playful smirk playing on his lips.
“You’re arrogant, you don’t listen to instructions, and your left hip flexor is still tight,” I replied smoothly, tapping my pen against the clipboard. “But… biomechanically speaking, you’re a miracle.”
He reached out, smoothly plucking the clipboard from my hands and tossing it onto a nearby bench. He stepped closer, crowding my space, his hands resting lightly on my waist.
“My three months are up today,” I said softly, the reality of the calendar finally catching up with us.
The underworld war was over. Vincenzo was dead, and Massimo had reclaimed his throne with an iron fist. Camila had survived her gunshot wound but was facing decades in federal prison after Massimo's lawyers quietly leaked her illicit activities to the FBI. The empire was secure, and Massimo’s recovery was virtually complete.
“I checked your bank account this morning,” Massimo said, his voice dropping an octave, his thumb tracing the curve of my hip. “The fifty thousand was deposited. Your tuition for the doctoral program is paid in full for the next three years.”
“I saw,” I whispered.
“So,” he tilted his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that still made my breath catch. “The debt is paid. The contract is fulfilled. You have your money, and I have my legs.”
He paused, and for the first time since I met him, Massimo Pascale looked genuinely vulnerable. The ruthless mafia boss was gone, replaced by a man terrified of the answer to his next question.
“Are you leaving me, Tessa?”
I looked at him. I thought about the quiet, predictable life I had been fighting for before Camila’s phone call. I thought about the sterile clinics, the academic papers, the safe, boring existence that I had once desperately wanted.
Then I looked at the man who had pulled me into the shadows, the man who had dropped his weapon to save my life, the man whose darkness had somehow become my light.
I reached up, wrapping my arms around his neck, and pulled him down until our lips were a breath apart.
“I told you once, Massimo,” I whispered against his mouth. “I never leave a job unfinished. And your left hip flexor still needs a lot of work.”
He let out a low, rough laugh, the sound vibrating against my chest as his arms crushed me to him. He kissed me, hungry and deep, a promise sealed in the quiet warmth of the gym.
I had been hired to teach Massimo Pascale how to walk again. I didn't know I would end up walking beside him, as the queen of an empire built in the shadows.

But as he held me, I knew one thing for certain: I wasn't afraid of the dark anymore.
Do you think Tessa will truly be able to balance her life as a physical therapist with the demands of being the partner of a mafia boss?
