Chapter 9 - The Dragon's Lair

Every step up the wet, rusting iron staircase felt like climbing a mountain with lead weights tied to my boots. The narrow stairs groaned beneath my feet, forcing me to hug the cold, damp stone wall as I ascended deeper into the tower. Rain drummed violently against the exterior masonry, masking the sound of my movement.
As I approached the upper landing, fifty feet above the ground, the voices became clear.
"The federal agent's car was spotted two miles back," a harsh, foreign-accented voice growled. "She isn't alone."
"It doesn't matter," a second, deeper voice replied calmly. "The woman will come. She cares more for the girl's life than her own safety. Have the boat ready at the cove below. As soon as we extract the DNA sample and verify the cipher protocol, we burn the tower."
I reached the top platform beneath the lantern room. Through the metal floor grating, I could see three figures standing in the center of the circular room.
Sitting tied to a wooden chair was Lily. A strip of dark duct tape was slapped across her mouth, her eyes wide with sheer terror, tears tracking trails through the dirt on her pale cheeks.
Standing beside her was a tall, thin man in his late fifties with slicked-back gray hair, wearing an expensive wool overcoat over an impeccably tailored suit. In his gloved hands, he held a sleek medical kit containing a bone-marrow extraction needle and several glass vials. Beside him stood a massive, broad-shouldered mercenary armed with a suppressed submachine gun.
"Where is she?" the gray-haired man asked, checking his silver wristwatch. "Time is expiring."
I stepped out from the shadow of the doorway onto the iron floor, holding the leather briefcase out in front of me.
"I'm right here," I said, my voice echoing off the curved glass windows of the lantern room.
The mercenary instantly spun around, bringing his submachine gun up, aiming straight at my forehead.
Lily let out a muffled scream behind the tape, thrashing against her ropes.
"Stand down, Viktor," the gray-haired man ordered smoothly, raising a hand. He smiled at me with cold, lifeless eyes—eyes that held the exact same reptilian detachment as Arthur Vance’s, but far more calculated. "Miss Miller. I am Director Vance—though not related to Arthur, I assure you. I represent the governing board of Sterling-Apex."
"Let the girl go," I said, stepping closer, holding the briefcase higher. "You have the briefcase. You have the files. Take them and leave us alone!"
Director Vance chuckled softly, shaking his head. "You are delightfully naive, Rachel. Do you really believe Marcus's files are inside that bag? Agent Reed carried decoy papers. The true key to the Apex master ledger isn't paper or code. It’s encoded into the synthetic genetic markers Marcus spliced into his daughter's cellular structure during her private treatments in Switzerland."
My jaw dropped. "What?"
"Marcus was an expert bio-informatician before he became an accountant," Vance explained calmly, picking up the long, gleaming metal needle from the medical tray. "He hid two billion dollars in financial keys inside his daughter's marrow. All I require is a small sample. Once I have it, the girl is of no further use to anyone."
"You're a monster!" I roared, my hands trembling.
"I am a businessman," Vance corrected coldly. "Viktor, take the briefcase from her. Then put a bullet in her head."
The massive mercenary took two heavy steps toward me, lowering his weapon slightly as he reached out his left hand to grab the handle of the briefcase.
At that exact moment, the heavy glass window behind Director Vance exploded inward in a shower of lethal shards.
BOOM!
Evelyn Reed swung through the shattered window frame on a tactical rappel line, crashing directly into Director Vance, throwing them both onto the floor across the room.
The mercenary Viktor instinctively turned his head toward the explosion.
I didn't hesitate. I pulled the tactical stun gun from my coat pocket, lunged forward, and rammed the high-voltage prongs directly into the side of Viktor’s neck, holding the trigger down with all my strength.
Blue electrical arcs flashed violently with a loud, buzzing crackle.
Viktor roared in pain, his massive muscles convulsing as thousands of volts surged through his nervous system. He stumbled backward, dropping his submachine gun, crashing heavily over the iron railing onto the spiral staircase below, plunging fifty feet to the stone floor beneath.
"Rachel! Get the girl!" Evelyn screamed from the floor, struggling furiously against Director Vance, who was trying to pin her arm to the ground while drawing a concealed pistol.
I rushed to Lily, pulling my pocketknife out, slicing through the heavy ropes binding her wrists and ankles. I ripped the duct tape from her mouth as gently as I could.
"Rachel!" Lily sobbed, throwing her small arms around my neck, holding on for dear life.
"I've got you, baby! I've got you!" I gasped, scooping her up into my arms.
Behind us, a deafening gunshot echoed through the lantern room.
BANG!
I spun around, my heart stopping in my chest.
Director Vance slumped sideways onto the iron floor, a dark hole blooming in his chest. Stand above him, holding her silver service weapon with both hands, her shoulder bleeding heavily from a knife wound, was Evelyn Reed.
Evelyn breathed heavily, lowering her weapon, looking over at us through the rain blowing in through the shattered window. "Is the child hurt?"

"She's okay," I wept, kissing Lily's wet hair. "She's okay!"
"We have to get out of here," Evelyn said, clutching her bleeding shoulder as red-and-blue police lights began to flash through the rain-swept darkness down at the base of the cliffs. "The state police tactical team just arrived."
