Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH RETURNS
The boy slowly lowered the sandwich.
"Ma'am..."
His voice was quiet.
"Did I do something wrong?"
Elena couldn't answer.
Not immediately.
She stared at him.
Every feature.
Every movement.
Searching.
Remembering.
Hoping.
Fearing.
Then her eyes landed on something else.
Around his neck hung an old silver chain.
Worn from time.
Faded from years of use.
Her heart stopped.
She knew that chain.
Because she had placed it around her baby's neck herself.
The day he disappeared.
The day her world ended.
Tears finally spilled down her cheeks.
The boy's eyes widened.
He had never seen anyone react to him like this before.
Elena slowly knelt in front of him.
Her voice shaking.
Barely able to form the words.
"Where did you get that necklace?"
The boy touched it carefully.
"My grandmother gave it to me."
Elena's breathing became uneven.
"Where is she now?"
The boy lowered his eyes.
"She died last winter."
Silence.
Heavy.
Painful.
Then he looked back at her.
And asked the question that shattered what little strength she had left.
"Why are you crying?"
Elena reached toward his face with trembling fingers.
Not quite touching him.
Afraid the moment might disappear.
Afraid he wasn't real.
Because deep inside...
A truth she had buried for two decades was beginning to rise.
May you like
And for the first time in twenty years...
She dared to believe her son might still be alive.
