Chapter 14 - The Siege of Manhattan

"Blow the primary door seals, Daniel!" Grant shouted as the hissing sound of nitrogen gas began to leak into the vault chamber from the ceiling vents.

Daniel Ross did not hesitate. He attached two precision magnetic shaped charges to the reinforced locking bolts of the titanium vault door. "Heads down! Three, two, one!"

A deafening, muffled crack echoed through the chamber as the charges breached the mechanical latches. Smoke billowed into the corridor. Daniel kicked the heavy door outward with a thunderous clang.

"Move!" Grant urged, pulling Eleanor through the smoking doorway as alarms shrieked throughout the subterranean facility.

Two armed private security operatives in black tactical vests turned the corner of the corridor, raising their weapons. But Daniel was faster; using non-lethal kinetic rounds, he neutralized both assailants before they could acquire their targets. Within ninety seconds, Eleanor, Grant, and Daniel reached the freight elevator, bypassed the ground-level lobby, and emerged into a waiting armored SUV parked in the private underground tunnel.

"Get us to the French border," Eleanor ordered the driver. "We take the private airfield in Lyon. If Damien controls the Swiss civil aviation authorities, we fly out under diplomatic clearance from France."

By sunrise the next morning, the Whitmore jet pierced through the heavy cloud cover over New York City. The stakes had escalated into an all-out war for survival.

While Eleanor and Grant were airborne across the Atlantic, Damien Vance-Cross had executed the second phase of his corporate coup. Using high-powered lobbyists and corrupt state regulators, he had called an emergency shareholder meeting at the Whitmore Global World Headquarters in Midtown Manhattan, claiming that Grant and Eleanor were missing and presumed incapacitated following an incident in Europe.

Outside the towering skyscraper on 5th Avenue, hundreds of journalists, financial analysts, and television broadcast vans were swarming the plaza. Inside the grand auditorium on the fourth floor, over eight hundred major institutional shareholders sat in anxious anticipation.

On the main stage, Lawrence Vance stood behind the mahogany podium, smiling thinly alongside Damien Vance-Cross, who was dressed in an exquisite three-piece Italian suit, looking every bit the victorious conqueror.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the market," Lawrence Vance proclaimed into the microphone, his voice dripping with false solemnity. "In light of the tragic and sudden disappearance of Mr. Grant Whitmore and Miss Eleanor Whitmore during their unsanctioned travel abroad, the board has voted under Bylaw 14-B to grant temporary executive stewardship of Whitmore Global to the Vance-Cross Consortium. This will ensure our market capitalization remains stable and—"

The heavy mahogany double doors at the back of the auditorium crashed open with a sound like thunder.

Every camera in the room whipped around in unison.

Walking down the center aisle, flanked by four federal agents in windbreakers bearing the seal of the Department of Justice, was Eleanor Whitmore.

She wore a striking, blood-red tailored trench coat over a crisp black suit, her head held high, her eyes radiating an intensity that instantly sucked the air out of the auditorium. Beside her, Grant Whitmore walked with commanding, lethal grace, carrying a thick black briefcase.

The auditorium erupted into immediate chaos. Flashbulbs went off in a blinding frenzy. Shareholders stood on their seats, shouting questions while the broadcast cameras zoomed in on the heiress who had seemingly returned from the dead for the second time.

"Sit down, Lawrence," Eleanor’s voice boomed through the auditorium speakers as she walked straight onto the stage, taking the podium without breaking stride.

Damien Vance-Cross stepped forward, his eyes flashing with desperate venom. "You have no standing here, Eleanor! Security, remove these trespassers!"

"The only people being removed today, Damien," Eleanor said, turning her icy gray gaze directly onto him, "are you and your co-conspirators."

She slammed the black briefcase onto the podium and turned to the federal agents. "Special Agent Bradley. Execute the federal arrest warrants."
