Chapter 4 - BLOOD MONEY AND BROKEN TRUSTSZ

Seventy-two hours. The clock was ticking inside my head with the force of a sledgehammer.
By sunrise, the rain had stopped, leaving Manhattan blanketed in a thick, eerie fog that swallowed the tops of the skyscrapers. I hadn't slept a single second. My laptop screens were covered in sticky notes, complex algorithmic charts, and deep-web tracking protocols. If Julian Thorne thought he was dealing with an ordinary socialite who had gotten lucky at a wedding, he was about to learn the hardest lesson of his corporate life.
I walked into the maximum-security visitation wing of the Metropolitan Correction Center. The air smelled of industrial bleach and damp concrete. Electric doors hummed open and closed with heavy, metallic thuds.
I sat down at a stainless-steel table behind a thick pane of bulletproof Plexiglas. Moments later, the heavy door on the opposite side opened, and a guard escorted Adrian inside.
He looked unrecognizable. Gone was the immaculate, thousand-dollar suit and the arrogant posture. He wore an oversized orange jumpsuit, his hands chained to a leather belt around his waist. Dark circles bruised the undersides of his bloodshot eyes, and his hair was greasy and uncombed.
He slammed into the chair across from me, his eyes burning with pure hatred as he grabbed the plastic telephone receiver. I picked up mine.
"Came to gloat, you treacherous bitch?" Adrian spat, his voice raspy through the electronic earpiece. "Enjoying my money? Enjoying my penthouse?"
"You don't have a penthouse anymore, Adrian," I said calmly, my face an emotionless mask. "The bank foreclosed on it two hours ago. And as for your money, the Department of Justice cleared your primary accounts this morning. You’re broke."
Adrian’s jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth would shatter. "My lawyers will have me out on appeal before the month is over. My mother—"
"Your mother sold her diamond collection to pay her own legal retainer," I interrupted coldly. "She hasn't accepted a single call from this facility since yesterday afternoon. You’re on your own, Adrian."
He leaned closer to the glass, his breath fogging up the plastic. "Then why are you here? If you've stripped me clean, why come look at the corpse?"
"Julian Thorne," I said softly.
The reaction was instantaneous. Adrian flinched, his eyes darting frantically to the guards standing near the door before snapping back to me. All the manufactured bravado drained from his face, replaced by raw, primal fear.
"You... you spoke to Thorne?" he whispered, his voice trembling.
"He contacted me last night," I replied. "He wants his eighty million dollars. And he's using Mara’s forged medical files to blackmail us into paying it from the corporate reserve."
Adrian let out a manic, hysterical burst of laughter that ended in a dry cough. "You thought you were so brilliant, didn't you, Elena? You played the victim, you brought the Feds, you humiliated me in front of the world! But you don't understand the ecosystem you walked into! I didn't borrow that money because I wanted to! Thorne forced me to take it!"
I leaned forward, my eyes narrowing. "What do you mean, forced you?"
"Thorne doesn't just lend money to struggling companies," Adrian hissed, leaning his forehead against the glass. "He creates the struggle! He sabotaged my supply chains in Asia two years ago! He leaked fake safety reports about our real estate developments to drive our stock price down! He systematically bled Vale Meridian to the point of bankruptcy, and then he showed up like a savior offering an eighty-million-dollar lifeline!"
"He set you up," I realized, the pieces of the grand puzzle instantly shifting into focus.
"He sets everyone up!" Adrian raged, slamming his chained wrists against the table. The guard stepped forward warningly, but Adrian ignored him. "He wanted Vale Meridian’s commercial land because he knows something the public doesn't! The city council is secretly re-zoning the entire Hudson dock district next month for a multi-billion-dollar tech hub! That land isn't worth eighty million, Elena... it’s worth two billion!"
My heart did a violent double-take. The true scale of Thorne’s game was far vaster and infinitely more corrupt than simple financial extortion. Adrian hadn't just been a abusive monster at home—he had been a pawn in an elite predatory chess match.
"Where are the real ledger books, Adrian?" I asked, my voice dropping to an urgent whisper. "Not the ones I found in your study. The ones that prove Thorne manipulated Vale Meridian’s stock and forced the loan."
Adrian let out a bitter, lifeless laugh. "Why should I tell you? You destroyed my life. You put me in this orange suit. Let Thorne destroy you and Mara. You deserve each other."
"If you tell me, I give your defense team the encrypted files proving Celeste was the one who signed the offshore authorization transfers for Mara's clinic," I bargained without hesitation. "It shifts the primary corporate fraud liability from you to your mother. It cuts your potential sentence from forty years down to seven. You might actually walk out of here before you're forty."
Adrian stared at me, his chest heaving as he weighed his deep-seated desire for revenge against his desperate need for freedom. The silence between us stretched, heavy and suffocating.
"The safety deposit box," he finally whispered, his eyes hollow. "First National Bank of Zurich. Box number 884. The key isn't physical... it's an encrypted flash drive hidden inside the lining of my father's old pocket watch."
"Where is the watch?"
"Celeste has it," Adrian said, a dark, sinister smile slowly spreading across his face. "She took it from my dressing room right before the wedding. She thought it was worth fifty grand on the black market. If you want Thorne’s neck in a noose, Elena... you’re going to have to steal it back from my mother."
I hung up the telephone receiver without another word, stood up, and walked out of the visitation room.
As I stepped back into the blinding daylight outside the prison, my phone chimed. It was a text message from an unknown, encrypted server.

48 HOURS REMAINING, ELENA. TICK TOCK.
I stared at the screen, my jaw setting into an unyielding line. I wasn't just defending myself anymore. I was going to war against the architect of our ruin.
