Chapter 7 - The Midnight Boardroom

The Halstead manor was ablaze with lights at 11:30 PM. The crystal chandelier in the dining room gleamed, casting a brilliant, fracturing light across the long table. This time, the room wasn't filled with deceptive family members or celebratory executives. It was filled with the six senior board members of Halstead Property Group, all sitting in silence, their expressions anxious and confused.
Naomi stood by the French windows, her tablet connected to the room's main display screen. The atmosphere was thick with tension. The board members knew something massive was happening, but they didn't know the specifics of the Apex Horizon discovery or the ledger sitting inside my leather briefcase.
At exactly midnight, the front door bell rang.
The sound resonated through the house like a tolling bell. I remained seated at the head of the table, perfectly calm, hands clasped over my briefcase.
"Let him in," I said quietly to the security guard standing near the hallway.
A few moments later, Julian Vance walked into the dining room. He looked as impeccable as ever, wearing a dark navy suit, a silk tie, and carrying a slim leather folder under his arm. He smiled warmly at the board members, completely unfazed by their presence.
"Claire," Julian said smoothly, taking a position at the opposite end of the table. "I see you’ve called the entire board. A bit dramatic for a standard corporate restructuring, don't you think? But I suppose it saves time."
He placed his folder on the table and slid it toward me. "The documents are prepared. Forty percent of Halstead Property Group transfers to Vance Holdings, and the west wing is cleared for my occupancy. Sign it, and the anonymous file on your father vanishes forever."
The board members looked at each other nervously. The chairwoman, Margaret Vance (no relation to Julian), leaned forward. "Claire, what is the meaning of this? Who is this man, and what restructuring is he talking about?"
I didn't touch Julian's folder. I simply looked at him, my expression completely void of fear.
"Julian," I said, my voice echoing clearly in the silent room. "Fourteen years ago, my father made a terrible mistake. He diverted public funds to buy your family out of our company because he wanted to protect me from people like you. He returned the money, but the transaction was illegal. You came to my house forty-eight hours ago to use that information to extort forty percent of my life's work."
Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly, his smile stiffening. "Careful, Claire. You’re speaking in front of witnesses. If you confess to your father's grand larceny out loud, you expedite your own ruin."
"I'm not confessing, Julian. I’m setting the record straight," I replied. I opened my briefcase, pulled out the leather pocket ledger we had dug up hours earlier, and tossed it into the center of the table. It slid across the polished wood, stopping right in front of him.
"What is that?" Julian asked, refusing to touch it.
"That is Michael Mercer’s insurance policy," I said. "Before my ex-husband tried to violently force me into signing over the company, he received fifty thousand dollars from a Cayman Islands account owned by Vance Strategic Operations LLC. He also received multiple calls from a burner phone traced directly to your corporate headquarters."
Naomi tapped her tablet, and the massive display screen on the wall came alive. It showed a complete, unassailable mapping of the financial data from Michael's ledger, cross-referenced with Julian’s internal corporate registry.
"You didn't just discover Michael’s greed, Julian," I continued, leaning forward. "You manufactured it. You fed an abusive, narcissistic man confidential data about the Halstead trust to instigate a corporate takeover through domestic coercion and fraud. You are an active co-conspirator in the crimes that sent Michael Mercer to federal prison."
The board members gasped. Margaret stood up, glaring at Julian. "This is a direct assault on the integrity of this corporation!"
Julian’s face went completely pale, the aristocratic composure finally cracking. He stared at the screen, then down at the small, dirty ledger. He realized instantly that the leverage he thought he held had been completely swallowed by his own criminality.
"This is circumstantial," Julian hissed, his voice losing its smooth veneer. "A collection of logs and an inmate's scribbling. It won't hold up against the federal evidence I have on your father."
"It doesn't need to hold up in court tomorrow, Julian, because it's already holding up right now," I said calmly. "Naomi, show him the secondary connection."
Naomi pulled up another document. "At 11:00 PM tonight, a formal criminal complaint was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the FBI's white-collar crime division. Because your extortion involves a federally protected family trust, the Department of Justice has already authorized an immediate freeze on all domestic assets held by Vance Holdings pending a full investigation into your corporate espionage activities."

Julian took a step back, his hand slamming onto the table. "You bitch. If I go down, I'm taking the Halstead name with me. I’ll leak the Apex Horizon files to the press tonight!"
"Go ahead," I said, standing up from my chair, my posture tall and unyielding. "The press will see a fourteen-year-old story about money that was fully returned, released by a desperate man facing twenty years for extortion, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit fraud. My father is gone, Julian. You cannot punish his ghost. But I am right here, and I will watch the state strip you of everything you own."
