Chapter 12

The Journey ContinuesOn Harrison's eightieth birthday, Ellen organized a family dinner.
Everyone came.
Thomas.
Rachel.
Lucy and her husband.
Noah, now noticeably taller.
June.
Even Arthur traveled to attend.
After dinner, Noah handed Harrison a wrapped package.
Inside was a leather-bound journal.
The first page contained only one sentence.
Write the stories before someone has to imagine them.
Harrison looked around the table.
Every face waited patiently.
He opened the journal.
The pen trembled slightly in his hand.
Then he began writing.
"Margaret was my first love..."
He paused.
Smiled.
Crossed out the sentence.
Instead, he wrote:
"I have been loved more than once in my life.
Once by a girl who taught me courage.
Once by a family that welcomed a stranger.
Once by friends who arrived when I finally opened the door.
This is the story of how it all happened."
He looked up.
Noah asked, "Is that a better beginning?"
Harrison nodded.
"Much better."
Outside, evening settled over the city.
Inside, laughter filled the room.
Years earlier, Harrison had believed his life could fit inside two hands.
Now it stretched across generations, friendships, shared meals, and stories still waiting to be written.
The train had never truly been about leaving.

It had always been about finding the courage to continue the journey.
And at last, Harrison did.
