Chapter 10 - The Legacy Restored

At eight o'clock on Monday morning, I walked through the main glass doors of the newly renovated Vale Logistics Global Headquarters.
The building, which had once been a hub of secret wire transfers, illegal cargo manifests, and corporate paranoia, was now flooded with bright natural light. In the central lobby stood a massive, bronze commemorative plaque featuring a relief portrait of Evelyn Vale, inscribed with her favorite quote:
"Kindness does not mean blindness. Integrity is built in the dark."
Employees greeted me with warm, respectful nods as I walked toward the executive elevators. Union drivers, logistics managers, and office personnel were working together with a renewed sense of pride and security, knowing their pensions were safe and their leadership was honest.
I stepped into the top-floor executive suite—the room where Richard Sterling had once sat drinking scotch while plotting murders. The dark mahogany desk was gone, replaced by a clean, modern workstation made of sustainable oak.
Lila entered the room carrying two thick manila folders, dropping them onto my desk with a satisfying thud.
"Morning, Chief," Lila said, using my new title. Following the cleanup of the Sterling political network, the Governor had officially appointed me as the State Director of the Anti-Corruption and Public Integrity Commission.
"Morning, Lila," I said, opening the first folder. "What do we have today?"
"A multi-million-dollar municipal bid-rigging scheme involving two city council members and a heavy construction conglomerate," Lila replied with a sharp grin. "Just another quiet day in public service."
I looked out the panoramic window of the office. Far below, dozens of Vale Logistics freight trucks were pulling out of the terminal yard, carrying honest cargo to destinations across the country. The legacy my grandmother had worked her entire life to build was finally safe, clean, and thriving.
I picked up my pen, looked at the evidence files resting on my desk, and felt a deep, unwavering sense of peace.
My parents had tried to use a midnight raid, fake warrants, and a viral slander campaign to destroy my life and steal an empire. They had believed that silence meant weakness, and that justice could be bought with enough money and media manipulation.
They were wrong.
Silence was simply the place where evidence became dangerous.

And justice, once unleashed, was absolute.
"Lila," I said, looking up with a firm, decisive smile. "Issue the subpoenas. Let's get to work."
