Chapter 10 - RECLAIMING THE SKYZ

One Year Later.

The summer sun beamed down on the sprawling lawn of a magnificent waterfront estate in Oakville, Ontario, overlooking the sapphire expanse of Lake Ontario. White linen canopies fluttered softly in the warm breeze, and classical music filled the air as servers circulated with silver trays of champagne.

It was the grand opening celebration for the Vance Foundation—a multi-million-dollar non-profit organization founded by Claire to provide legal aid and financial independence resources for women escaping emotionally and financially abusive marriages.

Claire stood near the edge of the stone terrace, holding a glass of sparkling water. She wore an exquisite custom white silk dress that caught the sunlight. Her hair fell in soft, golden waves around her shoulders. She looked younger, lighter, and completely alive.

"A penny for your thoughts, CEO?"

Julian Mercier stepped up beside her, holding two glasses of iced tea. He handed one to her, his warm brown eyes crinkling with affection.

Claire smiled, taking the glass, her fingers brushing against his. "I was just looking at Noah."

Across the sprawling lawn, nine-year-old Noah was playing soccer with three other boys, his laughter carrying across the grass. He was healthy, thriving, top of his class at Havergal, and completely secure in the love of the mother who had fought the world to protect him.

"He's a great kid, Claire," Julian said softly, looking at her with quiet admiration. "You’ve done an extraordinary job."

"We did it together," Claire corrected gently, turning to look at Julian. Over the past year, Julian hadn't pushed her, hadn't rushed her. He had offered a steady, respectful partnership, showing her every day what a true, mature relationship looked like.

Just then, Rebecca Collins walked up the terrace steps, carrying a leather envelope under her arm. She was smiling broadly.

"Am I interrupting?" Rebecca asked playfully.

"Never," Claire laughed, turning to hug her attorney and friend. "Did the final filings clear?"

"Fully cleared," Rebecca announced, pulling a certified document from her folder. "The Manhattan court officially closed the bankruptcy and liquidation of Jason's former holdings today. The final disbursement of remaining joint escrow funds—another six hundred thousand dollars—has been transferred directly to the Vance Foundation endowment."

"And Jason?" Claire asked quietly. It was the first time she had uttered his name in months.

"He lost his driver's license last month due to child support default," Rebecca replied neutrally. "He’s currently working night shifts at an Amazon fulfillment center in New Jersey, living in a shared basement apartment. He tried to file a petition for phone access with Noah last week, but the judge dismissed it without prejudice because he failed to pay the court filing fee."

Claire listened, feeling no surge of triumph, no residual anger, and no bitterness. She felt only a tranquil, absolute indifference.

Jason Walker was no longer her husband, her enemy, or her problem. He was simply a lesson she had learned and mastered.

"Thank you, Rebecca," Claire said softly, handing the document back. "For everything."

"You did the work, Claire," Rebecca smiled, taking a glass of champagne from a passing tray. "I just wrote down the laws. Here’s to new beginnings."

Julian raised his glass. "To the future."

Claire looked out across the shimmering lake, where white sailboats caught the wind, cutting cleanly through the deep blue water toward the open horizon.

Two years ago, sitting on an airplane climbing into the sky above New York, listening to her cheating husband yell in panic through a vibrating phone, she had made a choice. She had decided that she would no longer be a victim of someone else's story.

She raised her glass, the glass clinking softly against Julian's and Rebecca's in the golden afternoon light.

"To the future," Claire toasted softly.

She took a sip, turned her back on the past forever, and walked into the sunshine to join her son.
