Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

Arthur Pendelton was a relic of the old Bellevue legal circuit—a man in his late sixties wearing an ill-fitting pinstripe suit who believed every domestic dispute could be resolved over a golf course handshake and a stern lecture to the wife. Ethan stood behind him, looking disheveled, wearing the same crumpled dress shirt from yesterday, his hair uncombed and his eyes bloodshot.
When Ethan saw me sitting next to Marcus through the glass partition, his expression shifted from panic to indignation.
Sarah Lin walked into Conference Room B alone, leaving the door slightly ajar. Marcus and I watched through the soundproof glass as the microphones piped the audio directly into our speaker system.
“Sarah, this is ridiculous,” Pendelton began, waving a stack of court papers dismissively. “An ex-parte asset freeze? An injunction on the residence? My client is a respected engineering manager. This is a private marital misunderstanding being blown completely out of proportion by an aggressive legal tactic. Ethan made a few discretionary family loans to help his sister during a medical and business hardship. That’s marital discretion, not grand larceny.”
Sarah didn’t sit down. She stood tall, resting her hands on the back of a leather chair, her expression carved from granite. “Arthur, your client stole three hundred and sixty thousand dollars of marital property over forty-eight months to fund a fraudulent takeover scheme engineered by his father. If you use the word 'discretionary' again in my presence, I will add a civil RICO claim to the complaint before lunch.”
Ethan lunged forward, leaning over the table. “Sarah, let me talk to Natalie! Natalie, listen to me!” he yelled, looking directly at the glass wall. “You don't understand what was happening! My dad was facing foreclosure on the family property! Claire was going through a nervous breakdown! I was holding everyone together! I was going to pay every single dollar back as soon as the Apex buyout closed!”
Sarah didn’t even flinch. “Mr. Vance, Apex Horizon is a fraudulent shell entity registered under your father’s name designed to defraud your brother-in-law out of his construction business. Your wife was not your partner; she was your unwilling, defrauded investor. And by the way, screaming through my conference room window is a direct violation of the temporary restraining order served on you two hours ago.”
Pendelton pulled Ethan back by his arm, his face reddening. “Now see here, Lin. Ethan is willing to make a good-faith offer. He will surrender his interest in the Kirkland home’s secondary equity line, Claire will sign a promissory note for thirty thousand dollars payable over five years, and we can enter a standard fifty-fifty separation agreement. Natalie drops the asset freeze, and we resolve this without dragging Howard Vance’s business into court.”
I stood up in my conference room, walked over to the wall-mounted microphone, and pressed the button. My voice reverberated through the speakers in Conference Room B, crystal clear and freezing cold.
“Claire’s promissory note is worth as much as the paper she cries on, Arthur,” I said.
Ethan spun toward the speaker, his eyes wide. “Natalie! Please, baby, don't do this. Think about seven years! Think about our vows! We promised for better or for worse!”
“You broke those vows the first time you took money from our retirement to pay for your sister’s convertible,” I replied, my voice slicing through his panic. “You broke them every time you called me crazy, controlling, and paranoid when I asked why our accounts were low. You let your family treat me like an interloper while you used my career to subsidize their fraud.”
“I was trying to protect you from the stress!” Ethan shouted, tears welling in his eyes.
“You weren't protecting me, Ethan. You were using me as an ATM with a wedding ring.” I took a breath, letting the finality of the moment settle over the room. “Here is our counter-offer: You will surrender the entire Kirkland residence with one hundred percent of the equity to me. You will forfeit your claim to all joint retirement funds. You will assume one hundred percent of the debt incurred on the First Cascade accounts. And Marcus and I will give Howard Vance exactly twenty-four hours to surrender all corporate records and resign from any association with Marcus’s company, or we hand the Apex Horizon file to the King County Prosecutor’s Economic Crimes Division.”
Pendelton gasped. “That is completely extortionate! No judge will grant a one-hundred-percent equity offset!”
May you like
“A judge will grant it when they see the forensic audit proving Ethan committed intentional fraud and breach of statutory fiduciary duty under RCW 26.16,” Sarah Lin countered smoothly. “You have until five o'clock tomorrow afternoon to return the signed stipulated decree, Arthur. After that, we go to trial, and your client can explain to a jury why his father was running an unlicensed Ponzi scheme out of his living room.”
Ethan slumped back into his chair, covering his face with his trembling hands. For the first time in his life, his charm, his excuses, and his family’s emotional manipulation had hit an impenetrable wall of cold, hard numbers.
