Zero nine

Chapter 9 - The Last Splash

Our final full day at the resort arrived all too quickly.

We spent the entire morning at the pool. This time, there was no drama, no competition for chairs, and no fear. We had our private cabana, but Mia spent most of her time in the main pool, playing with the other children who had flocked to her like moths to a flame.

They played sharks and minnows, built water castles on the shallow steps, and laughed until their throats were dry.

I sat on the edge of the pool, sipping an iced tea, watching her.

Evelyn walked over and sat down beside me, a smile on her face. "Look at her. She’s the queen of the pool."

"She really is," I smiled, feeling a deep, abiding peace in my soul. "She made peace with the couple from yesterday, you know."

"I heard," Evelyn nodded. "Word travels fast in a place like this. You’ve raised an incredible daughter, Sarah."

"She raised me, too," I said softly. "She showed me how to be brave when I wanted to run away. She showed me how to love when I wanted to lock my heart in a box."

"That’s what children do," Evelyn said, looking out at the water. "They are our mirrors. They show us who we are, and who we can be if we just let go of the fear."

As the afternoon began to fade, Marcus walked over to our cabana, carrying two small gift bags.

"A parting gift," he smiled, handing them to us.

Inside Mia’s bag was a beautiful, framed copy of the sunset photo Clara had taken. In it, Mia and I were laughing, our faces illuminated by the golden light of the setting sun, the ocean stretching out infinitely behind us.

Inside my bag was a small, silver necklace with a delicate dolphin charm.

"To remind you of your stay," Marcus said. "And to remind you that you are always welcome here. You are part of the family now."

I put the necklace on, feeling the cool metal rest against my skin. It felt like a shield, but not one built out of fear. It was a shield built out of love, strength, and the memory of a perfect weekend.

"Thank you, Marcus," I said, hugging him tightly. "For everything."

"It was an honor, Sarah," he whispered. "Keep fighting. Both of you."
