Chapter 2

The air in the boardroom turned instantly ice-cold. For three full seconds, no one breathed. Dominic stood frozen in the doorway, his custom suit suddenly looking like an oversized costume on a man whose entire world had just collapsed beneath his feet. Beside him, Victoria’s mouth hung open, her expensive pearl necklace clutching her throat as if it were choking her. Paige, who had walked in with her chin held high and a smug smirk plastered across her face, looked back and forth between Dominic and me as the reality slowly began to bleed into her consciousness.

"What... what is this?" Dominic stammered, his voice cracking. He took a step forward, pointing a trembling finger at me. "Is this a joke? Audrey, what the hell are you playing at? You're supposed to be in a shelter or whatever cheap motel you dragged yourself to! Get out of my seat!"

"It isn't your seat, Mr. Vance," the chairman, Richard Hayes, said sternly, leaning forward over his mahogany desk. "And you will refrain from speaking to the majority shareholder and Chief Executive of this board with such disrespect. You are currently here as a guest who is under active corporate investigation."

"Majority shareholder?!" Victoria shrieked, her shrill voice echoing off the glass walls overlooking the city skyline. She pushed past Dominic, her eyes bulging with pure, unadulterated rage. "She’s a penniless orphan! A nobody my son took in out of the kindness of his heart! She doesn't have two nickels to rub together! She stole this! She must have forged the documents!"

Sophia Sterling stepped forward from the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a leather-bound folio. Her crisp white suit and icy composure were in direct contrast to Victoria’s unhinged hysteria.

"Mrs. Vance, I strongly advise you to watch your accusations," Sophia said with a razor-sharp smile. "Every document verifying Ms. Crestwood’s ownership of Crestwood Global Holdings—which owns sixty-two percent of Vance Development—has been verified by federal auditors, the SEC, and the New York Supreme Court. If you accuse my client of forgery one more time in front of these witnesses, I will add defamation to the civil suit we filed against you thirty minutes ago."

Dominic’s face drained of every last drop of color. "Crestwood Holdings?" he whispered, his eyes wide with horror as the pieces finally began to click together. "The private equity firm that injected twelve million dollars into our firm two years ago... that was you?"

I leaned back in the high-backed leather chair, crossing my legs elegantly. I wore a tailored black pantsuit that covered the bruises on my arms, but nothing could cover the sharp, lethal clarity in my eyes. I looked Dominic directly in the eyes—the same eyes that had looked down at me as I lay bleeding on the marble floor.

"You were so proud when you signed that restructuring deal, weren't you, Dominic?" I said, my voice soft, smooth, and deadly. "You came home, popped a seventy-dollar bottle of prosecco, and told me that a real man knew how to secure high-level venture capital. You told me I wouldn't understand business if it slapped me in the face. You had no idea you were signing over control of your soul to the wife you treated like a servant."

Paige gasped, clutching Dominic’s arm. "Dominic... what is she talking about? What about my executive position? What about the apartment in SoHo you promised me?"

"Shut up, Paige!" Dominic snapped, shoving her hand off him. He lunged toward the table, his knuckles turning white as he slammed his hands down onto the wood. "Audrey, listen to me! You can't do this! We’re married! Marital assets mean half of everything you own belongs to me!"

Sophia burst out laughing—a single, mocking bark of laughter. "Mr. Vance, did you really think someone with eighty million dollars in a pre-existing private trust, managed by top-tier asset protection attorneys, would marry a man like you without a ironclad prenuptial agreement? Check your safe deposit box. Or better yet, call your lawyer. Oh, wait—his retainer check bounced this morning because your corporate accounts have been frozen."

Victoria let out a strangled gasp and gripped the edge of a chair to keep from falling. "You bitch... you absolute evil bitch! You set us up!"

"I gave you my heart, Victoria," I said coldly, standing up from my chair. The entire boardroom fell dead silent. "I gave your son three years of unconditional love. I cooked your meals, I endured your insults, I wore clothes from thrift stores because Dominic told me we had to 'save money for the company's future.' All the while, you were spending company funds on your diamond bracelets, and Dominic was buying Cartier watches for his mistress with the money my holding firm provided."

I stepped around the table, stopping just inches from Dominic. He looked smaller now. Diminished.

"You stepped over me when I was unconscious," I whispered, so only he, Victoria, and Paige could hear the raw agony masked behind my cold armor. "You left your pregnant wife on the floor to bleed out while you covered for your mother."

"I didn't know you were pregnant!" Dominic cried out, tears of panic finally welling in his eyes. He reached out to grab my hand, but I stepped back, disgusted. "Audrey, I swear to God! If I knew about the baby—"

"It wouldn't have mattered," I cut him off. "Because as Dr. Reed told you on the phone last night, you're sterile, Dominic. The baby was a miracle—a one-in-a-million chance that you squandered because you were too busy sleeping with Paige in our bed. And now, you will never have a child. And you will never have this company."

I turned to the board members. "Security, please escort Mr. Vance, his mother, and Ms. Paige off the premises. They are officially barred from all Crestwood properties, including Vance Development headquarters."

Four heavy-set security guards immediately stepped into the boardroom.

"Get your hands off me!" Victoria shrieked as a guard grabbed her arm. "Do you know who I am?! I am Victoria Vance!"

"Not anymore," I said, turning my back on them. "You're just a trespasser."

As they were dragged out down the hallway, Dominic’s desperate screams echoed through the glass walls: "Audrey! Please! Talk to me! Audrey!"

Sophia walked over to me, handing me a glass of water. "Phase one complete. But you know they won't go down quietly. Victoria is already calling her contacts in the press."

I took a sip of water, looking out over the city. "Good. Let them dig their own graves in front of the entire world."
