Zero nine

Chapter 11 - Retribution

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering chandeliers, expensive champagne, and high-society laughter. Reagan stood at the center of the room in a stunning red silk gown, holding a glass of champagne, surrounded by board members. Beside her stood Julian Vance, looking smug and untouchable in a tailored tuxedo.

"A toast," Reagan announced, raising her glass. "To the future of our city, and the final, peaceful dissolution of Dennis Logistics. May we look forward to a new era of growth with Vance Enterprises."

The crowd applauded.

Suddenly, the massive double doors of the ballroom were thrown open.

The laughter died instantly. All eyes turned to the entrance.

I walked in first, wearing a clean, fitted suit Maya had helped me secure. But I wasn't the one who stopped the room's collective breath.

Walking beside me, leaning slightly on my arm but standing tall, proud, and undeniably alive, was Camden Dennis.

Reagan's champagne glass slipped from her hand, shattering on the polished marble floor. Her face went entirely white, her mouth opening in a silent scream of pure horror.

"Camden?" she whispered, her voice carrying across the silent room.

"Hello, Reagan," my father said, his voice echoing with authority. "I hear you've been telling everyone I died. But as you can see, I am very much alive."

Julian Vance stepped forward, his eyes narrowing, his hand instinctively reaching toward his jacket. "What is the meaning of this? Security! Remove these intruders!"

"Don't bother, Julian," I said, stepping forward.

At that moment, the doors behind us opened again, and a dozen federal agents in windbreakers marked FBI flooded the room, led by a stern-looking woman in a dark suit.

"Julian Vance, Reagan Dennis, Carter Dennis—you are under arrest for federal money laundering, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder," the lead agent announced, her voice cutting through the panic.

Carter, who was standing near the bar, tried to run toward the back exit, but two agents tackled him to the ground, handcuffing him as he cried out in terror.

Reagan looked around wildly, realizing her empire of lies had collapsed in a single moment. "This... this is a mistake! Camden is insane! He’s been in a private care facility!"

"The ledger you tried to destroy," my father said, pointing to the black book I held in my hand, "contains every transaction you made with Julian Vance. And Dr. Sterling at St. Jude's has already signed a full confession detailing how you poisoned me to keep me quiet."

Julian Vance was handcuffed, his smug expression finally cracking into a look of sheer, venomous hatred as he was led past me.

"This isn't over, Dennis," Vance hissed.

"It is for you," I replied.

Reagan was led away in tears, her expensive red dress dragging on the floor, her fake pearls clinking as the handcuffs were secured around her wrists.

As the ballroom emptied, leaving only the federal agents and the shattered remnants of the gala, my father turned to me. He placed a heavy, warm hand on my shoulder, his eyes shining with pride.

"You did it, Finnley," he said. "You brought the truth out."

"We did it, Dad," I said, looking back at Maya, who stood near the entrance, a beautiful smile on her face.

For three years, I had been a number in a cell, stripped of my family, my name, and my future. But as I stood beside my father, watching our enemies led away in chains, I knew the nightmare was finally over.

The Dennis name was clean. And we were finally home.
