Chapter 13 - THE FINAL FEDERAL DEPOSITION

Z
The Federal Courthouse in Hartford, Connecticut, stood imposing and austere under the brisk autumn sunshine. Courtroom 2A was completely sealed to the public for the emergency revocation hearing of Camellia Vance-Holloway and the criminal conspiracy indictment of Luke Alexander Bennett.
Sitting behind the prosecution table were Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Hayes, Eleanor Cross, and myself. At the back of the gallery sat Annie and Daniel Reed, serving as primary witnesses for the United States Department of Justice.
Across the mahogany aisle, the defense table was the scene of an utter, unmitigated rout.
Camellia Vance-Holloway was dressed in orange federal inmate jumpsuits, her wrists and ankles shackled in heavy steel chains. She sat with her head buried in her cuffed hands, weeping silently, knowing that her probation violation, combined with the new evidence of grand larceny and extortion, meant an automatic return to federal prison with an additional eight-year consecutive sentence.
Beside her sat Luke Bennett, represented by a exhausted public defender who looked as though he would rather be anywhere else in the world. Luke was completely unkempt, his hollow cheeks covered in gray stubble, his eyes darting frantically around the courtroom like a caged rat realizing the trap door had permanently locked.
Presiding over the federal bench was Senior District Judge Thomas Vance—a no-nonsense jurist with a reputation for mercilessly dismantling white-collar sociopaths.
"Let the record reflect," Judge Vance boomed, his voice echoing off the oak-paneled walls, "that the court has reviewed the supplementary exhibits entered by the United States Attorney, specifically Exhibit A through F: the personal journals and synchronized financial ledgers of Ms. Camellia Holloway, verified by forensic handwriting analysis and federal banking subpoenas."
Judge Vance turned his piercing gaze toward Luke Bennett.
"Mr. Bennett, stand up."
Luke struggled to his feet, clutching the edge of the wooden table to keep from collapsing. "Your Honor... please... I am a victim of an elaborate con. Camellia Holloway manipulated my mental state—"
"Silence, Mr. Bennett!" Judge Vance snapped, his voice slicing through Luke's rehearsed excuses like a scythe. "Do not dare insult the intelligence of this court. The evidence before me conclusively establishes that as early as 2019, you knowingly, willfully, and maliciously engaged in a multi-state scheme to defraud your marital estate, embezzle from your firm's institutional clients, and commit interstate extortion against your former spouse and minor children."
Judge Vance slammed the heavy case file onto his bench.
"You did not merely fail as a husband and a father, Mr. Bennett; you operated as a common criminal hiding behind an elite family name. Pursuant to the federal sentencing guidelines, this court finds you guilty of three counts of interstate wire fraud, two counts of aggravated perjury, and one count of criminal contempt of a permanent federal protective order."
Judge Vance picked up his pen and signed the commitment orders.
"Luke Alexander Bennett, you are hereby remanded to the custody of the United States Bureau of Prisons for a term of eighty-four months at the Federal Correctional Institution, Otisville, to be followed by five years of mandatory supervised release. Furthermore, a total forfeiture order of $6.2 million is entered against all remaining assets, past pension rights, and future earnings, to be transferred directly to the educational trusts of Clover, Maya, and Phoebe Bennett."
Judge Vance then looked at Camellia.
"Ms. Holloway, your probation is formally revoked. You will serve the remainder of your original sentence plus an additional ninety-six months for aggravated fraud and extortion. Bailiffs, remove the defendants."
"Luke, you coward! You dragged me into this!" Camellia shrieked, thrashing against her heavy leg irons as federal marshals grabbed her by the arms and dragged her toward the holding cells. "You promised me a mansion! You promised me everything!"
Luke didn't even look at her. As two federal marshals seized his arms and clicked the steel handcuffs behind his back, he slowly turned his head toward where I sat at the prosecution table.
His face was a grotesque mask of tears, snot, and unadulterated ruin.
"Victoria..." Luke wept, his knees trembling as the marshals pulled him backward toward the iron door. "Please... just tell Clover... tell the girls... that I'm sorry. Tell them their dad loves them..."
I looked at him with the calm, clear, untroubled gaze of a woman who had completely excised the cancer from her family's soul.
"They already have a real family, Luke," I said quietly, my voice ringing clear through the empty courtroom. "And you are not in it."
May you like
The iron door slammed shut behind him with a heavy, final clang.
The war was over. The Bennett empire had not fallen; it had simply been purged, purified, and permanently entrusted to the hands of those who truly deserved it.
