Zero nine

Chapter 2

The air in the glass-walled conference room curdled into a suffocating, terrifying stillness. The faint hum of the air conditioner sounded like a roar against the backdrop of Julian’s shattered composure. The color had drained completely from his face, leaving behind a splotchy, sickly grey. His arrogant posture evaporated, his shoulders collapsing inward as he stumbled backward against his leather chair.

"This is ridiculous!" Eleanor shrieked, slamming her knuckles onto the polished table. Her voice cracked with a grotesque mixture of panic and righteous indignity. She pointed a trembling, diamond-ringed finger at me. "You bitter, vindictive little parasite! How dare you bring the police into our family matters? She’s lying, Detective! My son is a respectable businessman! She’s just furious because he’s leaving her for a woman who actually knows how to treat a man!"

Detective Miller didn’t even glance at her. He maintained an unblinking, iron-cold stare fixed squarely on Julian. "Ma'am, sit down and keep your mouth shut, or I will have my officer place you under arrest for obstruction of justice right now."

Arthur grabbed Eleanor’s arm, tugging her forcibly back into her seat. His hands were shaking so violently he could barely hold his wife steady. Across the room, Chloe shrank back against the wall, her phone slipping out of her paralyzed fingers and clattering loudly onto the carpeted floor.

"Julian..." Sienna whimpered, her polished facade cracking into sheer panic. The designer pen she had been holding so triumphantly dropped from her hand, rolling lazily across the white surface of the half-signed $500,000 equity release form. Her eyes darted frantically toward Marcus, her husband, who stood beside me like a mountain of unforgiving granite. "Marcus... please... we can talk about this. You don't have to do this to me. Think about our reputation—"

"Our reputation died the second you decided to rob my business associate's wife and funnel stolen funds into a shell corporation registered under your maiden name," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of a single drop of human warmth. He didn't even look at her as an emotionally compromised husband; he spoke to her like a cold-blooded prosecutor addressing a rat caught in a trap. "The shell entity, Vance & Cross Investments LLC, was flagged by my firm's forensic unit three hours after you initiated the transfer. Every digital fingerprint, every IP address from your joint tablet, every text message exchanging notary kickback rates with David Miller... it’s all in the hands of the United States Attorney’s Office."

"No... no, no, no," Julian stammered, sweating profusely now. Beads of perspiration rolled down his temples, dripping onto his pristine lapel. He took a desperate step toward the senior closing officer. "Look at me! I am the co-owner of the property! I have the right to liquidate equity! It’s a domestic dispute! It’s a civil matter!"

"It ceased to be a civil matter the moment you forged a federal disclosure document and used a state-commissioned notary to commit felony bank fraud," the closing officer replied coldly, sliding the leather portfolio entirely off the table and stepping back alongside the detectives. "First Heritage Title is officially revoking the transaction and freezing all pending wire transfers."

"Clara, please!" Julian suddenly whirled on me, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and frantic. The man who had casually sipped his morning coffee while demanding I vacate my own home forty-eight hours ago was now practically hyperventilating. He reached out to grab my sleeve. "Clara, look at me! We’re married! We can fix this! It was a mistake! Sienna dragged me into this—she needed the money! She manipulated me!"

"Julian!" Sienna screamed, her face contorting in betrayal. "You coward! You told me she was a pushover! You said she’d take the hit and crawl back to her parents!"

"Shut up, Sienna!" Julian roared back, his voice cracking wildly. He turned his pleading eyes back to me, taking a step closer, his hands raised in surrender. "Clara, baby, think about our five years together! You know I love you! I was stressed! I made a stupid decision! Tell the police it’s a mistake! Tell them you authorized it verbally! I’ll transfer the $150,000 right back to your account! I’ll put the entire house in your name! Just call them off! Please!"

I looked down at his trembling, sweating face. For years, I had believed this man was my anchor. I had poured my hard-earned salary, my late-night bonuses as a senior risk analyst, into building a life with him, only to be tossed out like garbage the moment he thought he could strip my assets.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I simply pulled my phone from my inner suit pocket, tapped the screen, and played a crisp, clear audio recording I had captured on my phone’s secure cloud server less than twenty-four hours ago in our kitchen.

Julian’s recorded voice echoed clearly through the silent conference room:

"I refinanced the property and pulled five hundred thousand dollars in equity... And you signed those documents last week... My friend handled the paperwork. Everything is already finalized."

Julian froze as if he had been struck by lightning.

"A full confession of pre-meditated forgery and bank fraud," I said, my voice dropping to an icy whisper that pierced through his chest. "Recorded legally under state single-party consent law. You didn't just steal my money, Julian. You handed me the rope to hang you with."

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. The metallic snap echoed through the room like a gunshot. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit bank fraud. You have the right to remain silent."

"Get your hands off me!" Julian shrieked as the officer violently grabbed his wrists and slammed him face-first against the glass wall of the conference room. "Mom! Dad! Do something! Call our lawyer! Call him right now!"

Eleanor rushed forward, weeping hysterically, grabbing at the detective’s uniform. "Let go of my son! You can't do this! Clara, you monster! You evil, conniving bitch! I will destroy you for this!"

"Touch my officer again, ma'am, and you will be spending the night in a cell right next to him," the second detective warned, stepping aggressively into Eleanor's path and brandishing his zip-ties. She gasped, recoiling back into Arthur's arms, who looked utterly broken, staring at the floor in silent shame.

Sienna was crying uncontrollably now, sitting on the floor as another female officer walked in to cuff her. "Marcus, please... I’m your wife!"

Marcus adjusted his cuffs, his expression completely unreadable. "You were my wife until 8:00 AM this morning when my legal team filed for an emergency annulment on the grounds of criminal fraud and asset dissipation. You are on your own, Sienna."

As the officers dragged a sobbing Julian and a hyperventilating Sienna past the doorway, Julian turned his head back toward me, his hair disheveled, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. "Clara! Please! Don't do this to me! I'm your husband!"

I stood straight, crossing my arms, watching him get shoved into the elevator. "Correction, Julian. You're a risk I just liquidated."

The heavy elevator doors slid shut, cutting off his desperate screams. But as I turned back to look at Eleanor, Arthur, and Chloe remaining in the room, I knew this was far from over. The money hadn't magically reappeared in my bank account yet, and the shadows behind Julian’s financial network ran far deeper than a simple real estate scam.
