Chapter 8 - The Vows

The morning of the wedding arrived with a sky so brilliant and blue it felt custom-made.
The ceremony was held in the expansive gardens of the Sterling estate, surrounded by hundreds of blooming white roses, lush green lawns, and the gentle splash of the stone fountain that Mom had designed.
It was an intimate gathering—sixty guests consisting of our closest friends, colleagues, medical staff who had treated Mom, and Sarah Lin.
I stood at the altar wearing a dark charcoal tuxedo, adjusting my cuffs. Marcus stood nearby in a neat suit, no longer acting as a bodyguard, but present as an honored guest.
The string quartet began to play a soft, elegant melody.
The crowd stood up.
My breath caught in my throat.
Maya walked down the aisle on the arm of her older brother, who had fully recovered from his illness years prior. She was breathtaking. Her white silk gown cascaded around her with timeless elegance, her dark hair was pinned up with tiny pearl accents, and a soft veil framed her radiant face. Her eyes were locked onto mine, shining with absolute clarity and emotion.
Beside me, sitting in the front row in a beautiful lilac dress, Mom wiped tears of happiness from her cheeks, holding a embroidered handkerchief in her lap.
When Maya reached the altar, her brother placed her hand in mine. Her fingers were warm, steady, and soft.
"You look stunning," I whispered.
"You look handsome," she whispered back, her smile lighting up the entire garden.
The officiant stepped forward, his voice echoing warmly over the peaceful grounds.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today not merely to unite two lives in holy matrimony, but to celebrate a love that was forged in the fires of courage, truth, and unwavering loyalty."
As the ceremony progressed, I looked at the woman standing before me. I remembered the blood running down her brow on that dark day in the kitchen. I remembered her sitting by my mother’s hospital bed, reading magazines in the dim light. I remembered her standing firm against billionaire lawyers and high-priced threats without ever compromising her integrity.
When it came time for the vows, I took both of her hands in mine.
"Maya," I said, my voice deep and filled with emotion. "Three years ago, my world was collapsing under deceit and betrayal. In the middle of that darkness, you stood like an unshakable shield for my mother, risking your own safety for a stranger. You showed me what true bravery looks like. You brought peace back into our home, joy back into my mother’s heart, and love back into my life. I promise to protect you, respect you, and honor you every single day of my life. You are my home."
Maya pressed her lips together, fighting back tears as she squeezed my hands.
"Carter," she began, her voice steady and rich with feeling. "When I came into your home, I was broken, tired, and afraid of the world. You showed me that justice exists. You believed in me when powerful people tried to tear me down. You gave me a future, a family, and a love that makes me feel completely safe. I give you my heart, my loyalty, and my life, today and forever."
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant declared. "You may kiss the bride."
I stepped forward, pulled Maya gently into my arms, and kissed her.
The crowd erupted into applause and cheers. Rose petals floated down from the flower arches, caught in the gentle warm breeze.
Mom stood up from her chair, clapping with a radiant smile on her face, her eyes filled with a peace that had been absent for far too long.
At the reception that evening, the garden was illuminated by thousands of fairy lights strung through the oak trees. Music filled the night air as guests laughed, dined, and danced under the stars.
I sat with Maya at the head table, sipping champagne as we watched Mom dancing joyfully with Sarah Lin near the pavilion.
"Look at her," Maya said softly, resting her head against my shoulder. "I haven't seen Eleanor this happy in years."
"She’s happy because she knows we’re safe," I said, putting my arm around Maya’s waist. "She knows the house is filled with love now."
"Mr. and Mrs. Sterling," Maya said thoughtfully, testing the name on her lips. "It sounds right."
"It sounds perfect," I corrected.
As the night wore on, I looked up at the quiet, starlit sky above our home.
The cameras that had recorded the dark acts of the past were still active, quietly monitoring the perimeter—not out of fear, but out of a permanent commitment to protect the sanctuary we had built.

Chloe had thought she could steal a family’s legacy with lies and violence. She had ended up behind iron bars, stripped of everything she valued. But through her cruelty, the universe had brought me the bravest, most remarkable woman I would ever know.
I held my wife close, stepping onto the dance floor beneath the glowing lights, leaving the ghosts of the past permanently behind us as we stepped together into a bright, boundless future.
