Chapter 15 - THE FINAL RECKONING

The rain over Washington, D.C. was heavy, washing the white marble steps of the United States Capitol Building in a slick, brilliant sheen. Black town cars lined the plaza, their hazard lights flashing through the gray evening mist as news crews set up satellite trucks along Constitution Avenue.
Inside a private, soundproof conference room on the third floor of the Russell Senate Office Building, Senator Thomas Sterling sat behind a massive mahogany desk, adjusting his red silk tie. At sixty-five, Sterling was a titan of American politics—a silver-haired, booming-voiced statesman who was three weeks away from being elected Vice President of the United States.
Standing near the heavy oak door were two dark-suited Secret Service agents.
The door opened, and Sarah Lin—now Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation—walked into the room, flanked by two armed federal marshals. Behind her walked a man in a dark suit, carrying a leather briefcase.
Senator Sterling looked up from his speech notes, a patronizing smile spreading across his practiced, television-ready face. "Deputy Director Lin. I was told you had an urgent national security matter to discuss before my campaign rally tonight. I hope this won't take long. The network cameras are waiting downstairs."
Sarah Lin didn't smile. She stepped up to the mahogany desk and set down a thick, sealed federal indictment folder.
"Senator Sterling," Sarah said, her voice echoed clearly off the high ceilings. "By order of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, you are being served with an immediate arrest warrant for high treason, conspiracy to commit murder, and racketeering."
Senator Sterling’s smile instantly vanished. He burst into a loud, booming laugh, leaning back in his leather executive chair. "Is this some kind of sick joke, Sarah? Do you know who I am? I am thirty days away from the White House!"
"You were thirty days away from the White House, Thomas," the man behind Sarah said, stepping forward into the light.
I set my leather briefcase onto his mahogany desk and popped the brass latches open.
Sterling’s eyes locked onto mine, flickering with a brief moment of confusion before sharp recognition set in. "You... you're Richard Vance's son."
"Major Daniel Vance," I corrected softly. "The son of the man you paid Arthur Pendelton three million dollars to poison six years ago."
Sterling’s face turned pale, but his political composure tried to reassert itself. He turned to his Secret Service agents. "Agents! Arrest these people! They are making false allegations against a presidential candidate!"
The two Secret Service agents didn't move. They stood by the door, their expressions cold and unyielding.
Sarah Lin pulled a digital tablet from her coat and activated the screen, playing an audio file recorded twenty-four hours ago in a federal interrogation room.
"Senator Sterling gave me the clearance codes for Vanguard's military transit routes," Arthur Pendelton's voice echoed through the speaker, crisp and clear. "He told me that if Richard Vance was not eliminated before the Senate Armed Services audit, he would ensure both my family and Victoria Vance were ruined..."*
"That is a forgery!" Sterling shouted, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "Arthur Pendelton is dead! That evidence is inadmissible!"
"Arthur Pendelton’s physical bank ledgers weren't the only thing we found, Senator," I said, pulling out the glass ledger disk from Liechtenstein and laying it flat on his desk alongside my father's silver dog tag. "This disk contains sixteen encrypted wire transfers from your campaign fund directly into Sovereign Capital's Cayman accounts, signed with your personal digital key."
Sterling stared at the glass disk, his chest heaving, his eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated panic. The political shield he had built over forty years was disintegrating before his eyes.
"You... you can't expose this..." Sterling stammered, his voice dropping into a pathetic, desperate whisper. "It will tear the government apart. It will destroy public trust in the entire defense system..."
"The system was already broken when men like you bought it," I said, leaning over his desk until I was inches from his face, looking into his terrified eyes. "My father died protecting this country from men like you. Today, his son finishes his work."
Sarah Lin nodded to the federal marshals.
The two marshals stepped forward, grabbed Senator Sterling by his arms, yanked him out of his leather executive chair, and forced his hands behind his back. The sharp, heavy metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the silent Senate office.
"Daniel Vance!" Sterling shrieked as he was dragged toward the door, his expensive suit tearing at the sleeve, his face red with humiliation. "You can't do this to me! I am the Vice President elect!"
"You're a traitor," I said quietly, watching him being led out into the hallway, where dozens of news cameras and reporters were waiting to catch the fall of America's most powerful politician on live television.
When the room cleared out, Sarah Lin turned to me, offering a quiet, respectful smile. "It's done, Daniel. The entire network—from Zurich to Washington—is wiped clean."
I picked up my father's silver dog tag from the mahogany desk, running my thumb over the worn steel letters of his name.
"Thank you, Sarah," I said.

I walked out of the Senate building into the soft evening rain of Washington. Maya was standing at the bottom of the white marble steps, holding a black umbrella, waiting for me with a smile that carried all the light in the world.
I walked down the steps, slipped my arm around her waist, and together, we walked away from the shadows, stepping forward into a future that was finally, truly ours.
