Chapter 3 - The Shadow Investor

Z
The morning light filtering through the blinds of the Richmond Police Department’s major crimes division was cold and unforgiving. Detective Marcus Vance, a veteran investigator with sharp gray eyes and a total intolerance for bureaucratic games, sat across from me, Director Beck, and Allison Price. On the stainless-steel table between us lay the forensic report from the airfield fire alongside the expanding paper trail of Apex Horizon Investments.
"We have enough probable cause to pull Helen Miller in for questioning regarding the auxiliary hangar fire," Detective Vance stated, flipping through the binder of thermal imaging prints and vehicle match records. "Her Mercedes SUV was caught on three separate traffic cameras returning to her gated community twenty minutes after the incendiary device detonated."
"What about Peter?" I asked, my voice steady despite the churn of anger inside me. "There is no way Helen acted without his knowledge. He knew the maintenance schedule for my aircraft. He had access to my command shift logs."
"Peter is playing dumb," Vance replied, leaning back in his chair. "He spent the entire night at a downtown casino hotel, meticulously ensuring he was seen by dozens of valet staff and high-definition surveillance cameras. He built himself an airtight alibi while his mother did the dirty work."
"That’s his classic pattern," Allison interjected. "Peter never puts his own hands on the blade. He manipulates the women in his life—first Paige, then Caroline, and now his own mother—to execute the illegal maneuvers while he maintains plausible deniability."
"Well, his alibi might protect him from an immediate arson charge, but it won't protect him from the federal bank fraud indictments that are brewing," Detective Vance said, sliding a newly subpoenaed document across the table. "Take a look at this."
I reached forward and picked up the paper. It was a wire transfer confirmation from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, releasing two hundred and fifty thousand dollars into a newly opened commercial account under the name Vanguard Realty Management.
"Who owns Vanguard Realty?" I asked.
"That's where this story takes a dark turn," Vance said gravely. "Vanguard Realty isn't owned by Paige, Peter, or Helen. It’s registered to a man named Arthur Vance—no relation to me—a convicted corporate raider who specializes in buying distressed real estate from vulnerable families through predatory schemes. Arthur Vance was Paige Mercer’s real boss before she took the job at Peter’s firm."
The puzzle pieces began falling into place with terrifying speed. Paige hadn't just been Peter’s secret lover; she had been inserted into Peter’s life as a wedge. Arthur Vance’s firm had targeted Peter’s inflated pride and financial vulnerabilities, feeding him the idea of liquidating our family home and transferring the funds into shell companies, while planning to double-cross Peter the moment the property was transferred.
"Peter thinks he’s the mastermind," I said, a bitter smile touching my lips. "He thinks he’s stripping me of everything so he can start fresh with Paige and a pile of stolen money. But in reality, he’s just a pawn in a much bigger real estate fraud syndicate."
"Exactly," Allison agreed. "And if Peter realizes he’s been set up by Paige and Vance, his entire facade will crumble. Right now, he still believes he’s in control."
"Then we need to shatter that illusion," I said firm. "He needs to know that the people he trusted to ruin me are about to sink him."
Later that afternoon, I sat in the glass-enclosed conference room of my attorney's office, awaiting Peter’s arrival. Under the terms of the temporary court order, we were permitted to hold structured settlement discussions regarding the division of personal property and the formal disposition of the Virginia home. Peter walked into the room accompanied by his newly retained high-powered defense lawyer, a sleek man named Richard Vance—ironically, no relation to the detective, but possessing the same shark-like demeanour.
Peter looked visibly exhausted. Dark circles under his eyes hinted at sleepless nights, and his usual arrogant posture was noticeably slouched. Yet, when his eyes met mine, he tried to project an air of disdainful superiority.
"Meredith," Peter said coldly, taking his seat across the broad wooden table. "I hope you’re ready to be reasonable today. This dragged-out legal war is destroying my family's reputation."
"Your family’s reputation was destroyed the moment you staged a fake paternity test in front of your relatives, Peter," I replied quietly, looking him dead in the eye. "And it certainly didn't improve when your mother set fire to my command hangar on Tuesday morning."
Peter’s lawyer instantly raised a hand. "Allegations without proof, Mrs. Miller. My client knows nothing about any airfield incident."
"Your mother’s Mercedes is currently in police impound, Mr. Vance," Allison interrupted smoothly, sliding a police report across the table. "And federal arson investigators have recovered DNA evidence from the wire cutters used at the hangar's power box. It matches Helen Miller."
Peter turned visibly pale, his hands trembling slightly as he stared at the document. "What? Helen... she wouldn't..."
"She did," I said, leaning forward. "Because she was desperate to cover up the fact that she mortgaged our house behind your back to pay off her own family debts in Maryland. Did she tell you that, Peter? Did Paige tell you that Arthur Vance—Paige’s true business partner—has already placed a secondary lien on the property, meaning you won't get a single cent from the sale?"
Peter’s jaw dropped. He looked at his lawyer, then back at me, utter disbelief washing over his features. "Paige... Paige said the money was secure in the Apex account. We were buying the beachfront property in South Carolina..."
"Paige lied to you," Allison said coldly. "Arthur Vance cleaned out the Apex account seventy-two hours ago. The six-figure sum you transferred from your shared marital account with Meredith? Gone. Wired to an offshore account in Nassau."
Silence descended upon the room like a heavy anvil. Peter’s carefully constructed reality was shattering into dust before his eyes. He wasn't the cunning strategist who had outsmarted his wife; he was the gullible fool who had destroyed his own marriage, betrayed his innocent daughter, and exposed his mother to prison time, all for a fraudulent promise of easy wealth made by a professional syndicate.
"No... no, that can't be true," Peter stammered, his voice breaking. "Paige loves me. She promised..."
"Paige signed a cooperation agreement with the state prosecutor two hours ago, Peter," Allison added, striking the final blow. "She traded full testimony against you and Arthur Vance in exchange for a reduced sentence on wire fraud charges. She gave them every text, every voice note, and every document proving that you willfully participated in identity theft and corporate fraud."
Peter buried his face in his hands, a quiet groan escaping his throat. For the first time since this nightmare began, I saw him for what he truly was: a weak, hollow man whose unbridled selfishness had ruined every single life he touched.
"What... what do you want from me?" Peter wept softly into his hands.
May you like
"I want total surrender," I replied, my tone icy and unwavering. "You sign full legal and physical custody of Maisie over to me today. You sign over your rights to the home so our legal team can clear the fraudulent liens and protect our daughter's financial future. And then, Peter, you go down to the major crimes unit and tell Detective Vance every single thing your mother did, before she takes the entire fall for you."
Peter looked up, his eyes bloodshot, full of panic and regret. The illusion was gone. The shadow investor had pulled the strings, but it was Peter who would pay the ultimate price.
