Chapter 2 - The Fractured Mirror

The hallway outside the bridal suite was dim, illuminated only by modern sconces that cast long shadows against the polished wood floor. Vanessa stood before me without the armor of her high heels, looking smaller and infinitely more fragile than the poised socialite who had mocked my career barely an hour ago. The bass from the reception below vibrated faintly through the floorboards, a bizarre, rhythmic reminder that life went on just beyond this narrow corridor.

"I didn't plan for any of this, Claire," she whispered, clutching her designer shoes against her chest like a shield. "When I saw that picture... it felt like the floor fell out from under me. I thought she was in Atlanta. I thought she had a whole family, a mother and a father, living some peaceful, wealthy suburban life. I never knew the placement failed. The agency promised me she would be protected."

"Life rarely follows the brochures agencies hand out," I replied, crossing my arms to steady the slight tremor in my own fingers. "The couple who took her couldn't handle the strain. By the time Lily was placed with me, she was terrified of closed doors and screamed every time someone turned off a light. I rebuilt her sense of safety piece by piece. I didn't do it out of spite or to prepare for some dramatic showdown. I did it because she deserved a mother who stayed."

Vanessa flinched again, the sting of my words settling deep into her features. "I was twenty-two, Claire. My father threatened to cut off my college tuition, and Owen... Owen was living out of a duffel bag, playing gigs and taking odd contracting jobs. We were kids pretending to be adults. When I found out I was pregnant, the terror paralyzed me. I thought giving her away was the only unselfish thing I had left to offer."

"And yet, you lied to Daniel about all of it," I said, unable to keep the edge entirely out of my voice. "You didn't just hide a pregnancy. You erased his best friend from your history."

"Because Daniel worshipped Owen!" Vanessa's voice cracked, rising in volume before she quickly checked herself and glanced nervously toward the heavy oak doors at the end of the hall. "You know how Daniel is. Everything is a competition, an ego check. If he knew I had slept with Owen, loved Owen, and borne Owen's child, he would never have looked at me the same way. He would have turned me into a trophy he took from a dead man, or despised me for carrying a ghost's baby. I built a clean slate. I thought the past was buried."

"The past is a seven-year-old girl sitting inside that room eating chocolate cake," I countered. "She isn't a secret to be managed or a liability on your social resume. She is a human being with real questions."

Before Vanessa could answer, the door at the far end of the hallway swung open with a heavy thud. Daniel emerged, his tie loosened and the top button of his dress shirt undone. His face was flushed, dark with a toxic mixture of alcohol, wounded pride, and sheer fury. He stopped when he saw us standing together, his gaze shifting between my guarded posture and Vanessa's tear-stained face.

"Touching," Daniel said, his voice dripping with venom as he stalked down the hallway. "The ex-wife and the current girlfriend, bonding over the wreckage. Did you two compare notes on how best to humiliate me in front of two hundred people?"

"Daniel, stop," Vanessa pleaded, taking a step back toward the wall. "This isn't about you."

"Isn't it?" Daniel snapped, towering over her. "My brother's wedding, my former wife, my deceased best friend, and the woman living in my condo. You let me introduce you to my friends, you let me bring you into my family, knowing that you gave birth to Owen's kid. Did you laugh behind my back every time I talked about him? Did you think it was funny that I didn't know?"

"Nobody is laughing, Daniel," I interjected, stepping directly between him and Vanessa. The old instinct to shrink away from his towering anger tried to flare up, but the mother in me obliterated it entirely. "Your vanity is the least important thing happening tonight. Keep your voice down, or I will have Michael call security and have you escorted out of his own wedding."

Daniel's jaw clenched so tightly the muscles jumped beneath his skin. "You always loved playing the righteous martyr, Claire. You couldn't give me a child, so you went out and bought Owen's daughter just to hold a piece of my past hostage."

The sheer depravity of the accusation knocked the breath out of me for a split second. But before I could strike back with words, the door to the bridal suite cracked open. Lily peeked out, holding her little stuffed rabbit by its worn ear, her wide hazel eyes darting between the three adults.

"Mommy?" Lily asked, her small voice cutting through the suffocating tension. "Is the angry man yelling at you?"

Daniel froze. For the very first time, he looked directly into Lily's face without the veil of adult drama obscuring his view. He looked at her dark brown curls, the distinct arch of her eyebrows, and the shape of her small hands clutching the toy. The ghost of Owen Price stood in that hallway, wrapped in a yellow dress, staring directly at the man who claimed to have loved him like a brother.

Vanessa covered her mouth with a trembling hand, stifling a sob. Daniel took half a step backward, his breath catching in his throat as the reality finally pierced through his narcissistic haze.

"Lily, sweetie, go back inside and close the door for just one more minute," I said softly, keeping my eyes locked on Daniel. "Mommy is just finishing up."

Lily nodded hesitantly, slipping back into the room and pulling the door shut until the latch clicked.

The silence that followed was absolute. Daniel looked as if he had seen an apparition, the color completely drained from his face.

"Claire..." Daniel murmured, his voice suddenly stripped of its arrogance, replaced by an unsettling, possessive wonder. "Those are Owen's eyes. That's his face."

May you like

"She is my daughter, Daniel," I said with chilling finality. "And you will stay away from her."

Without waiting for his reply, I opened the door, stepped inside, and locked it behind me.
