Chapter 6

VI. Cecília Relearns the Sun
Cecília’s recovery was slow. There were no miracles. There was no embrace capable of giving back ten years. Her body needed to relearn strength. Her mind needed to navigate the fog created by years of medication, fear, and isolation.
But there were small signs. In the first week, Cecília asked for coffee. "Real coffee," she said, her voice faint. "Not that sad water they used to give me."
Alexandre laughed through his tears. He ordered fresh, pour-over coffee to be made immediately. The aroma filled the hospital room. Cecília closed her eyes. "Your grandmother used to say that good coffee calls the soul back home."
Alexandre held her hand. "Then we'll call it back slowly."
In the second week, she asked for music. Sofia, who began visiting her with the family's blessing, brought a small radio. They tuned into an old station playing soft bossa nova.
Cecília hummed along. The voice barely came out. But it came out. Alexandre heard the melody and recognized it. The same one from his childhood. The same one the hallway had echoed back like a haunting. That song wasn't a ghost. It was a cry for help.

Sofia sat in a corner, discreet. She never tried to put herself at the center of the story. But Cecília always called her over. "Girl." "Yes, Dona Cecília?" "You were brave."
Sofia lowered her eyes. "I only told him what I heard." "Many people hear things and pretend that silence is safer." Sofia didn't answer. Because she knew it was true.
