Chapter 9 - The Truth in Zurich

The silence of the estate that night was heavy, oppressive, and suffocating.
Julian sat in his library, the unopened leather journal resting on the mahogany desk in front of him. He hadn't opened it. The moment Marlowe had shoved it into his chest and ran out of the room, Julian had felt an overwhelming wave of shame crash over him. His paranoid survival instincts, forged in the cutthroat world of global corporate warfare, had blinded him to the genuine heart of the woman who had brought light back into his life.
He looked down at his bandaged hand. Marlowe had tended to those wounds with absolute tenderness. She had held Lila while mercenaries breached the house. She had refused to leave when given every opportunity to save herself. And in return, he had treated her like an enemy operative.
A knock at the library door shattered the quiet.
Vance stepped into the room, holding a tablet displaying a live data stream. His expression was grave, his eyes sharp and focused.
"Julian," Vance said softly. "I got the breakdown on the Zurich account from our Swiss legal liaisons. The transaction history just cleared."
Julian leaned forward, setting Marlowe’s journal aside. "What does it show?"
"Evelyn wasn't spending that money," Vance revealed, placing the tablet on the desk. "Every single dollar that Marcus Sterling transferred into that Zurich account over the last seven years was immediately rerouted to an automated trust fund."
Julian looked at the screen. "A trust fund for whom?"
"For a specialized private medical research facility in Switzerland," Vance explained. "A facility specializing in early-stage aggressive genetic diseases. Specifically, Huntington's disease."
Julian’s eyes widened in horror. "Huntington's?"
"Seven years ago, Evelyn was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive genetic strain of Huntington's disease," Vance whispered softly, his voice full of solemn regret. "She kept it entirely secret from you, Julian. She knew that if you found out, you would drop everything, abandon your company, and spend billions trying to save her in a fight that medical science couldn't win."
Tears began to pool in Julian’s eyes as the horrifying truth began to take shape in his mind. "And Marcus?"
"Marcus discovered her diagnosis through a private medical insurance audit seven years ago," Vance continued. "He used his own private capital to fund her secret experimental treatment in Switzerland—not out of kindness, but to blackmail her. He threatened to reveal her terminal diagnosis to the board and the press, which would have collapsed Hartwell Global’s stock price during the massive European expansion."
Julian sank back into his chair, a devastating gasp escaping his lips as he buried his face in his hands.
Evelyn hadn't been betraying him. She had been carrying a horrific, terminal secret for seven long years, silently enduring experimental treatments in Europe while protecting Julian’s empire and shielding her young daughter from the reality of her impending death. And Marcus Sterling had weaponized her suffering to maintain leverage over the company.
"My God..." Julian sobbed quietly, his chest heaving as the weight of seven years of hidden pain crashed down upon him. "She suffered all alone... she was protecting me..."
"She was protecting you and Lila," Vance said gently, laying a comforting hand on Julian’s shoulder. "And Marcus used that secret to control the board. But when Evelyn passed away three months ago, Marcus lost his leverage. That’s why he panicked and tried to force the takeover—he knew he couldn't control you anymore without Evelyn's secret."
Julian sat in the quiet room, tears streaming down his face as the last remaining shadows of doubt were stripped away. Evelyn had loved him with a fierce, protective devotion that transcended her own life. And Marlowe Reed had been entirely innocent—an unwitting bystander caught in the crossfire of Marcus Sterling's legacy of destruction.
Julian looked at Marlowe’s leather journal resting on the desk. He picked it up gently, holding it against his chest, feeling an intense, burning urgency to undo the damage he had caused hours earlier.
"Where is Marlowe?" Julian asked, wiping his eyes and standing up abruptly.
"She’s upstairs in Lila’s room," Vance said softly. "She’s been sitting beside Lila’s bed all night."
Julian walked out of the library, his heart hammering in his chest. He rushed up the grand staircase, his heavy footsteps echoing through the dark halls until he reached Lila’s bedroom.
The room was bathed in the soft blue glow of a nightlight.
Lila was sound asleep in her bed, hugging Barnaby the rabbit. Sitting on the carpet beside the bed, her back resting against the frame, was Marlowe. Her eyes were closed, her face pale, stained with dried tears, her body exhausted from weeks of emotional trauma.
Julian walked into the room softly, dropping to his knees beside her.
Sensors in her sleep caught his presence; Marlowe opened her eyes, blinking softly in the dim light. When she saw Julian kneeling beside her, her expression immediately walled off, her posture stiffening.
"Mr. Hartwell," she whispered, her voice cold, professional, and distant. "If you're here to ask more questions about my background, please wait until morning."
"Marlowe... please," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with deep, unyielding remorse. He reached out and gently laid his hand over hers, not letting her pull away. "I know about Zurich. I know everything."
Marlowe paused, her eyes searching his face in the dark. She saw no corporate coldness, no suspicious rage in his eyes. She saw only profound grief, vulnerability, and tears.
"Evelyn had Huntington's disease," Julian choked out, his voice breaking completely. "She kept it secret for seven years to protect me and Lila. Marcus was blackmailing her with her medical records. That’s why the wire transfers existed. Evelyn was using his money to fund experimental research... she was trying to stay alive for Lila."
Marlowe’s jaw dropped in absolute shock. Tears filled her brown eyes as she absorbed the tragic truth about her childhood friend. "Oh, Evelyn..." she gasped softly, putting her hand over her mouth.
"I was wrong," Julian said, his eyes locking onto Marlowe’s with absolute sincerity. "I let my fear and my paranoia dictate how I treated you tonight. You came into this house with nothing but pure love for Evelyn and Lila. You stood by us when everything was burning around us. And I hurt you."
Julian picked up her leather journal from the floor beside him and placed it back in her lap, completely unopened.
"I didn't read a single page," Julian whispered, his thumb gently caressing the back of her hand. "Because I don't need a book to tell me who you are, Marlowe. I see who you are every time you look at my daughter. I see who you are every time you put yourself between us and the dark."
Marlowe looked at the unopened journal in her lap, then up at Julian’s tear-stained face. The walls she had put up around her heart shattered completely.
"I'm sorry I yelled at you," Marlowe whispered, a fresh tear trailing down her cheek. "I was just so tired of being doubted..."
"You will never have to prove yourself in this house again," Julian said, his voice thick with raw emotion. He reached out, his long fingers gently wiping the tear from her cheek. "I promise you, Marlowe. As long as I live, you will never be alone again."
Marlowe leaned into his hand, closing her eyes as she let out a long, shaky breath. The distance between them vanished, replaced by a deep, powerful emotional connection that had been building silently from the moment she had cooked the Sunday Star Soup in his kitchen.

In her bed, four-year-old Lila shifted under her blankets, letting out a soft sigh as she held her stuffed rabbit close.
Julian and Marlowe sat together on the floor of the sunlit nursery, holding hands in the quiet darkness, bound together by the truth, the memory of Evelyn, and the bright, undeniable future they were beginning to build together.
