Chapter 6 - The Siege of Ward Seven

The alarm rang like a death knell through the narrow corridors of Crestview Care. Arthur didn't run; running made noise, and noise drew fire. Instead, he moved with a swift, calculated power, holding Clara’s limp body securely against his chest with his left arm while keeping his right arm free to clear corners.
Two uniformed security guards rounded the corner, nightsticks drawn.
"Stop right there!" one yelled, reaching for his taser.
Arthur didn't give them the chance. He stepped into the first guard, driving his massive shoulder directly into the man's chest, lifting him off his feet and slamming him into the concrete wall. Before the second guard could react, Arthur swept his leg, knocking the man off balance, then disarmed him with a swift blow to the wrist, sending the taser clattering down the hall.
"Move!" Arthur barked at me.
We scrambled out the rear exit, plunging back into the freezing blizzard. The cold air hit Clara like a shock wave, causing her to gasp frantically for breath as Arthur sprinted through the deep snow toward his truck. I threw open the passenger door, helping guide Clara into the back seat, wrapping her in Arthur’s heavy wool survival blanket.
"Is she stable?" Arthur demanded, jumping into the driver's seat and slamming the door just as security guards burst out of the facility entrance behind us.
"Her pulse is weak, but she’s conscious!" I yelled over the roar of the engine. "We need to get her to a real hospital, Arthur! If she goes into withdrawal from those high-dose sedatives, her system will collapse!"
"We can't go to any public hospital," Arthur said, throwing the truck into drive and spinning out onto the main road. "Apex controls the local health network. The second her name hits an admission computer, Hayes and Marcus will have state police and private security locking down the building. There’s only one place we can go."
"Where?"
"Back to St. Jude’s," Arthur said, a cold, ruthless determination lighting up his eyes. "In Ward Seven. Where Sam's baby is."
"Are you crazy?!" I shouted. "That's the first place they’ll look for us!"
"Exactly," Arthur replied. "They think we're running away. They think I'm going to take Clara and hide in the woods. They won't expect us to walk right back into the lion's den. And besides... Sarah needs her mother."
Thirty minutes later, under the cover of the blinding snowstorm, Arthur parked the truck in the loading bay beneath St. Jude Medical Center—a area reserved for emergency organ transport vehicles that I had access keys to. Using my supervisor credentials, we bypassed the main lobby and took the private service elevator straight up to the 4th floor NICU.
The night floor was eerily quiet. Nurse Sarah was sitting at the desk, looking frantic, holding a telephone receiver. When she saw me walk in, followed by Arthur carrying a wrapped, half-conscious woman, her jaw dropped.
"Catherine!" Sarah gasped, standing up. "Where have you been?! Security has been here twice! Hayes is filing criminal charges against you and Mr. Vance for trespassing, and the state custody officers are coming at 6:00 AM to transfer Baby Girl Sterling!"
"Lock the double doors, Sarah," I commanded, stepping behind the nurse's station and grabbing a primary emergency kit, an IV pole, and a bag of saline. "Lock them now and turn off the corridor lights."
"Catherine, that's illegal!" Sarah cried, her voice trembling. "We could lose our licenses! We could go to prison!"
"Look at this woman, Sarah!" I snapped, pulling back the blanket to show Clara’s pale, tear-streaked face and the needle marks on her arms. "This is Sam Sterling's sister. The baby's mother. She was kidnapped and chemically suppressed by Apex executives to cover up a corporate scandal! Are you going to help us save this family, or are you going to let Hayes hand that baby over to the people who tried to murder her mother?"
Sarah looked at Clara, then at Arthur, who was carefully laying Clara down on a portable cot in the private recovery room adjacent to incubator seven. Sarah swallowed hard, her eyes filling with tears of sudden realization.
She turned, walked over to the main doors, engaged the heavy mechanical deadbolts, and flipped the switch that lowered the emergency security shutters over the glass windows.
"We have two hours before the morning shift arrives," Sarah said, her voice shaking but resolute. "What do you need me to do?"
"Hook Clara to a clean saline flush and prep an arterial blood gas kit," I ordered. "Arthur... go to the baby."
Arthur walked slowly over to incubator seven. Inside, tiny Baby Girl Sterling was writhing softly, her vital signs dipping again as her heart rate fluttered at 165. Arthur reached his large, scarred hands back through the incubator ports, cupping her tiny head and chest just as he had done hours before.
The baby’s whimper softened almost instantly.
In the cot three feet away, Clara’s eyes shifted toward the sound of her child's faint breathing. "My... my baby..." she sobbed, weak fingers reaching out into the dark room.
Arthur reached out with his free hand, taking Clara's hand in his left, while holding the baby with his right. He was the physical bridge connecting a broken mother to her dying child.
"I'm here, Clara," Arthur whispered, tears overflowing his eyes. "Captain Vance is here. Nobody is taking her from you again."

Then, from the outer hallway, the metallic strike of heavy boots echoed outside the deadbolted doors, followed by the harsh, amplified voice of Marcus Reed over a bullhorn:
"Arthur Vance! You are surrounded by state law enforcement and Apex Security! Open these doors and surrender Clara Sterling, or we will breach the facility by force!"
