Chapter 4 - STRIKE AND COUNTERSTRIKE4

The clock on the office wall ticked incessantly, each second measuring the countdown to Vanessa’s 5:00 PM deadline.

Marcus Vance—no relation to us, merely a former federal prosecutor who now headed the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division in New York—had dispatched a team of cyber-forensic agents to our estate within two hours of my call. By midnight, my late husband’s quiet study had been transformed into a tactical command site. Monitors glowed with code lines, signal tracers, and network diagnostics.

Agent Sarah Chen, a razor-sharp operative with dark hair and intense focus, tapped her keyboard rapidly. "Mrs. Vance, we’ve isolated the cloud server where Vanessa uploaded the Project Aether files. It’s an encrypted server based in Zurich, but the access key is tied to a mobile device currently located at the Grand Regency Hotel downtown."

"She’s staying at the Regency," Daniel confirmed, leaning over Agent Chen’s shoulder. "Her parents owned a penthouse suite there."

"She thinks she’s safe behind hotel Wi-Fi and offshore proxies," I observed, sipping my black coffee. "She expects us to wire the money because she believes we are terrified. Extortionists rely on panic, Agent Chen. They calculate that the victim's fear of public ruin will outweigh their reason."

"So, what's our move?" Daniel asked, looking between me and the federal agents. "If we execute a federal raid on her hotel room right now, she might have an automated fail-safe that publishes the leak the moment her phone is seized."

"He’s right," Agent Chen agreed. "Modern extortion software often includes dead-man switches. If she doesn't input a code every twelve hours, or if the device detects a forced shutdown, the drive automatically mirrors the data to public domain servers."

I stared out the window, watching the moonlight reflect off the quiet waters of the garden fountain. "Then we don't force her hand. We give her exactly what she wants—or rather, the illusion of it."

"A dummy transfer?" Daniel asked.

"Better," I replied, turning back to the room. "A poisoned payload. Daniel, your engineering team built Project Aether. Can you compile a modified version of the core architecture file? Something that looks identical to the original code, but contains a tracking script that executes the moment anyone attempts to open or transfer it?"

Daniel’s eyes lit up as he understood my train of thought. "A digital Trojan horse. If she tries to send the file to a news network or a competitor, the script will silently lock the host machine, erase the stolen cloud drive, and mirror her entire local drive back to federal servers."

"Precisely," I said. "We give her a updated, seemingly 'unlocked' key to the files as part of our surrender negotiation. We play the desperate, broken family."

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the trap was set. Daniel sent a message to Vanessa:

> "We can’t move ten million without board detection. I can give you three million in unallocated liquid capital right now, plus the master encryption key to Project Aether so you know we aren't trying to lock you out. The rest will come after the weekend. Please, Vanessa. Don't ruin my life. My mother is devastated. She’s willing to sign the house release if you just give us time."

Twenty minutes passed. The silence in the command room was nerve-wracking.

Then, Daniel’s phone chimed.

> "Three million in crypto to the address attached within two hours. And tell your pathetic mother that her precious house will be my new summer home once she’s tucked away in a facility. Send the key."

"She swallowed the bait," Agent Chen whispered, her hands flying across her keyboard. "We’re routing the transfer through a federal honeypot wallet. The key file is loaded with the tracker. Sending... now."

We watched the data transfer bar reach one hundred percent.

For thirty minutes, nothing happened. Vanessa was verifying the arrival of the three million dollars in her offshore wallet.

Then, red alerts flashed across Agent Chen’s primary monitor.

"Signal acquired!" Chen shouted. "She’s opened the key file! She’s trying to access the master drive to verify the code!"

"Execute the payload," I commanded softly.

On the screen, lines of green code turned blood red.

"The Trojan script is running," Chen reported, a triumphant grin spreading across her face. "It’s completely locked her local laptop at the Grand Regency. It’s overriding her administrative permissions, pulling her local chat logs, her emails, her deleted files... and look at this."

A secondary window popped up on the monitor, displaying a live directory of Vanessa’s private documents.

"My God," Daniel breathed, leaning closer. "It’s not just Vance Software..."

"She’s done this before," I said, my voice icy.

On the screen were folders spanning five years: Harrison Estate Settlement, Oakridge Holdings Litigation, Dr. Julian Vance - Medical Evaluations.

Vanessa hadn't just targeted Daniel. She was a serial corporate predator. She had targeted two other wealthy men before Daniel, using falsified medical reports, fake pregnancies, and stolen corporate records to extract multi-million-dollar out-of-court settlements.

"She’s a professional blackmailer," Agent Chen said, turning to me in awe. "Mrs. Vance, this isn't just extortion. This is a federal racketeering operation."

"And now we have the keys to her entire kingdom," I said, adjusting my blazer. "Daniel, prepare the car. It’s time we pay my former daughter-in-law a visit."
