Chapter 9

"Mr. Bennett," Judge Holbrook began, leaning over his bench. "Do you understand why you are here today?"
"Yes, Your Honor," Harold’s voice rang out, remarkably clear and firm. "I am here because my wife’s legal team is attempting to convince you that I am mentally unfit to control my own life."
"And what is your response to that claim, sir?"
"My response, Your Honor, is that I have been blind for ten years, but I am not senile."
A faint murmur rustled through the gallery. Vivian’s attorney cleared his throat nervously, but Judge Holbrook raised a hand to silence the room.
"Mr. Sterling claims you were coerced into revoking your wife’s power of attorney by your daughter," the judge noted.
"My daughter did not coerce me, Your Honor," Harold replied, looking straight at the judge. "She opened my eyes. On Monday of this week, I discovered that my wife, Vivian Vance-Ross, forged my daughter’s signature to secure a $1.2 million commercial loan against her active-duty military benefits and death indemnity rider."
"Objection! Unsubstantiated allegations!" Sterling shouted, standing up.
"Sit down, Mr. Sterling," Holbrook ordered sternly. "Go on, Mr. Bennett."
"Following that discovery," Harold continued, pulling a small, neatly organized folder from his jacket, "I hired an independent forensic accounting firm to review all corporate filings made under my name over the past five years. I discovered that $900,000 of equity was stripped from my primary residence in Wellesley without my informed consent, transferred into a shell company named Ross Holdings LLC, and subsequently wired to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands."
Harold held out the folder. Captain Miller stepped forward and handed the documents to the court clerk, who passed them up to the judge.
Judge Holbrook opened the folder. As he read through the certified bank statements, wire transfers, and title filings, his bushy eyebrows raised higher and higher. The courtroom was dead silent.
Vivian’s face had gone completely white. She leaned over to whisper frantically to her secondary attorney, her hands shaking violently as she gestured toward the document stack.
"Mr. Bennett," Judge Holbrook said slowly, looking up from the papers. "You were aware of these transactions prior to this week?"
"I was lied to, Your Honor," Harold said, his voice carrying a deep, painful resonance that filled the entire room. "I was told those documents were for tax planning. I trusted my wife. I allowed my grief over my late wife’s death to make me weak, and Vivian took advantage of that weakness to systematically strip my family of everything we owned. But I revoked her power of attorney on Wednesday morning of my own free will, with full mental capacity, because I will no longer allow her to use my name to commit financial crimes against my daughter or my estate."
Judge Holbrook closed the folder with a loud, decisive snap.
He looked over his glasses at Vivian Vance-Ross. The look in the judge’s eyes was like cold iron.
"Mr. Sterling," Holbrook said, his tone chillingly soft. "Does your client wish to cross-examine Mr. Bennett?"
Sterling looked at Vivian. Vivian was staring at Harold with pure, burning hatred, but her hands were trembling so badly she could barely hold her pen. Sterling leaned in, whispered something in her ear, then slowly turned back to the judge.
"No... no cross-examination, Your Honor," Sterling said softly, sitting down in his chair as if he had just been deflated.
Judge Holbrook adjusted his robe and leaned forward toward the microphone.
"The court finds that Mr. Harold Bennett is fully competent, fully aware, and acting entirely within his legal rights," Holbrook declared, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "The emergency motion to vacate the power-of-attorney revocation is DENIED."
A sharp gasp escaped Vivian’s lips.
"Furthermore," Judge Holbrook continued, his eyes locked on Vivian, "in light of the forensic accounting evidence presented here today indicating potential wire fraud, forgery, and illegal asset stripping, this court is issuing an immediate freeze on all corporate and personal assets associated with Vivian Vance-Ross, Ross Holdings LLC, and affiliated entities. The clerk of this court is ordered to immediately forward these files to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts for criminal review."

Holbrook struck his gavel against the wooden block with a thunderous BANG.
"Court is adjourned."
