Chapter 8 - CORNERED BEAST

Z
The hallway on the eighth floor of the Regent Hotel was filled with armed tactical officers pressed against the walls, their rifles pointed at the heavy oak door of Room 814. The air was thick with adrenaline and the sharp smell of rain brought in from outside.
Detective Vance led me through the barricade of officers, handing me a heavy bulletproof vest. “Put this on. You stay behind me at all times. If she opens fire, you drop to the floor immediately.”
I strapped the vest tightly over my suit jacket. My hands were perfectly steady. I had reached a strange, icy calm—the kind of hyper-focus that takes over when a crisis reaches its absolute peak.
We stepped into the hotel suite. The room was trashed. Clothes were ripped from hangers, lamps were smashed on the floor, and empty pill bottles were scattered across the king-sized bed.
At the far end of the room, the heavy marble door to the master bathroom was cracked open by an inch. Light spilled out onto the dark carpet.
“Eleanor!” Detective Vance called out, keeping his sidearm raised and trained on the door. “This is the police! Lower your weapon and step out with your hands visible!”
“Shut up!” Eleanor’s voice shrieked from behind the door. It didn't sound human. It was raw, cracked, filled with a terrifying mix of hysteria and absolute madness. “I won’t talk to you! I want Julian! I know he’s out there! Julian! Show yourself!”
I stepped forward, moving past Detective Vance despite his hand reaching out to stop me. I stood ten feet from the bathroom door, fully exposed in the center of the room.
“I’m here, Eleanor,” I said, my voice echoing clearly off the walls.
A harsh, bitter laugh erupted from the bathroom. “Oh, the dutiful son! The brilliant operations director! Look at what you’ve done, Julian! Look at how you’ve humiliated your own mother!”
“You humiliated yourself,” I replied calmly. “The police know about Dad, Eleanor.”
The laughter stopped dead.
A heavy, terrifying silence descended upon the room.
“What... what did you say?” she whispered, her voice suddenly trembling.
“Doctor Sterling confessed,” I said, taking a small step closer. “He gave the DA the payment records. He told them about the digitalis. They know you murdered my father seven years ago.”
A gasp echoed from behind the door, followed by the sound of glass shattering inside the bathroom.
“He lied!” Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched sob. “That weak, pathetic coward lied! Your father was dying anyway! He was weak! He was ruining our finances with his stupid investments! I saved this family! I built the Vance name!”
“You didn't save anything,” I said, my voice dripping with cold disgust. “You were a parasite. You murdered my father for an insurance payout, you stole from your own children, and then you tried to destroy my wife because she was too kind to fight back against your sickness.”
“I gave you life, Julian!” she roared, the bathroom door swinging open slightly wider. Through the crack, I could see her silhouette—her hair wild, her expensive clothes stained, a small black revolver trembling in her hand. “I made you who you are! You owe everything to me! And you threw me away for that pathetic, broken girl!”
“Clara is ten times the woman you will ever be,” I said, looking her straight in the eye through the opening. “She loves her son unconditionally. You only love power. And now you have nothing.”
“I have this!” she shrieked, suddenly kicking the bathroom door wide open and stepping out into the room, pointing the revolver straight at my chest.
“DROP THE WEAPON!” SWAT officers screamed from the hallway, their laser sights painting red dots across her chest and head.
Eleanor didn't look at the officers. Her bloodshot, crazed eyes were locked entirely on me. Her finger was pulling back on the heavy steel trigger of the gun.
“If I can’t control you,” she whispered, her face twisting into a demonic smile, “then I’ll take you with me.”
Time seemed to slow down to a crawl. I saw her finger tighten. I saw the red laser dots dancing across her dark suit jacket.
I didn't flinch. I didn't step back. I looked my mother in the eyes and accepted whatever was coming next.
