Chapter 6 - Julian Hale's Web

Z
While the federal marshals were escorting Marcus Vance out of Harlow Tower, four hundred miles away in an executive suite at the Ritz-Carlton in Boston, Julian Hale was desperately packing a leather duffel bag.
Julian, Vanessa’s thirty-two-year-old brother, was a former second-tier investment banker whose entire career had been defined by failed startups and unpaid debts—until Daniel Miller had handed him the keys to Vanguard Strategic Logistics. For eighteen months, Julian had lived like an oil baron, flying on private charters, leasing luxury penthouses, and bragging at exclusive nightclubs about his international logistics syndicate.
Now, his phone was vibrating relentlessly on the marble glass table, flashing notifications that made his heart hammer against his ribs.
ALERT: Vanguard Logistics accounts at First Caribbean Bank frozen by court order.
ALERT: Vanessa Hale – Call Declined / Inmate Communications System.
MESSAGE FROM DANIEL: 'You need to liquidate the secondary Cayman escrow NOW. Hire a private jet to Nassau. If you get caught, don't mention the Vance contracts.'
“Idiot,” Julian muttered under his breath, his hands sweating as he shoved gold watches, stacks of hundred-dollar bills, and three encrypted hardware crypto wallets into his bag. “You told me Claire was a brainless socialite who spent all day shopping! You swore she’d never look at the ledger!”
Julian zipped the bag and threw on a heavy shearling jacket. He grabbed his secondary burner phone, dialed his private aviation broker, and pressed the device to his ear as he hurried toward the suite’s double doors.
“Come on, pick up, pick up...” he hissed.
“I’m afraid your flight has been canceled, Mr. Hale,” a deep voice said from the living room.
Julian froze.
Standing by the panoramic window overlooking Boston Common were two men in dark suits wearing tactical earpieces, their Harlow Corporate Intelligence badges pinned to their lapels. Between them sat a woman in a crisp gray overcoat holding a tablet: Special Agent Sarah Chen from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Task Force.
Julian dropped his duffel bag. It landed on the plush carpet with a heavy thud.
“How... how did you get in here?” Julian stammered, backing toward the wall. “This is private property! I’m calling hotel security!”
Agent Chen stood up, holding out a certified federal seizure warrant. “The hotel management cooperated the moment we showed them the international wire tracking data, Julian. We’ve been monitoring your communications since 4:00 AM when your sister decided she preferred five years in federal custody over twenty-five.”
“Vanessa?” Julian gasped, his voice cracking. “Vanessa wouldn't turn on me! I’m her brother!”
“Vanessa turned on everyone,” Agent Chen replied coldly. “She gave us the access keys to the server in Belize. She gave us the audio recordings of Daniel coaching you on how to falsify freight insurance certificates. And she gave us the tracking numbers for the bearer bonds you moved through the Boston harbor terminal last Thursday.”
Julian sank against the wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the carpet, his chest heaving. The illusion of his invincible luxury lifestyle had dissolved in an instant.
“It wasn't my idea,” Julian sobbed, burying his head in his knees. “Daniel approached me! He said Harlow Industries had slush funds that were never audited. He said he was going to divorce Claire the moment the merger closed and marry Vanessa! He promised me five million dollars to act as the intermediary! He threatened to ruin me if I backed out!”
Agent Chen motioned for the two Harlow security officers to secure the duffel bag and the hardware wallets.
“You’ll have plenty of time to explain Daniel’s promises to a grand jury,” Chen said. “Right now, you’re going to unlock this phone, you’re going to open the Cayman escrow portal, and you’re going to authorize the immediate repatriation of the thirty-two million dollars you stole from the Harlow trust.”
Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot and filled with panic. “If I do that... if I give the money back, do I get immunity?”
Agent Chen looked at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated contempt.
“You get a warm meal in the holding facility, Julian. That’s the only promise you’re getting today.”
As the agents hauled Julian to his feet and cuffed his wrists behind his back, his burner phone lit up on the carpet one last time. It was an automated notification from the Fairfield County Department of Corrections:
INMATE DANIEL MILLER HAS POSTED EMERGENCY SECURED BOND VIA EXTERNAL GUARANTOR.
Agent Chen glanced at the screen, her brow furrowing. “Who posted his bond? Every account associated with him was frozen three hours ago.”

The Harlow security officer tapped his earpiece, listening intently to a dispatch from New York. His face went instantly pale.
“Agent Chen,” the officer said urgently. “Daniel didn't use cash. An anonymous private equity group based in Zurich just posted five million dollars in collateral through a secondary surety company. Daniel has been released from Stamford holding—and his ankle monitor just went offline.”
